The Citizen, 1997-03-12, Page 11Juvenile play The Creemore goalie has his ear to the ground and his eye on the puck as the Brussels Juvenile appears to have the upper hand in this contest at the net during the OMHA playoff game on Friday night. The outcome is up in the air as the team awaits details of a protest apparently made from the visiting squad. Brussels Juries in unique series Game three of the OMHA Juve nile "D" was played in Brussels on Friday night against Creemore. From the opening face-off it was a fast-paced, hard hitting contest. Brussels opened the scoring on a goal by Tim Machan. This goal held up until the third when Creemore replied to even the score and send the game into overtime. The fast pace continued in over time with both teams having good scoring opportunities, but the game ended in a tie. Saturday night Brussels had two buses travel to Creemore for game four. The team was advised by OMHA that game three was being protested due to an ineligible Brus sels player. This game started as a repeat of game three with both teams playing good playoff hockey. As the game progressed, however, things turned bad, Assistant Coach Keith Mulvey said. "I think the officials have for gotten to let the boys play hockey and not get invovled". Creemore had built up a 3-0 lead into the third period. With 20 sec onds remaining and the face-off in the Creemore end, Mulvey said, the linesman threw the puck into the Brussels end of the ice. "Players on both teams could not believe what had happened. Both teams started pushing and shoving with the result that Brussels received in excess of 160 minutes in penalties and Creemore received two minutes. "We must have been fighting our selves," said Mulvey. Until the paperwork is done the outcome of this series is unknown. "It is really too bad," said Mulvey. "There has been no animosity between these teams. They get along and have spoken to each other before the game. The refs just seem to have forgotten who plays the game." THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 1997 PAGE 11. Wingham team leads playoff series The Wingham PeeWees hold a two games to none lead in their WOAA final series against Lucknow. Following a 6-1 decision in Lucknow last Monday, the Wingham squad scored a 6-3 win to take the series lead. The third game in the best of five series was played Monday in Lucknow. Geoff Lindsay joined Tyson Glassier as a forward due to an injury to Jake Henderson. Zane Davies rejoined the team as the backup goalie. In the first period, Kent McPher son scored two from Zachary O'Krafka and Curtis Knight to give Wingham a 2-0 advantage. Justin Campbell made it 3-0 for Wingham with help from Matthew Dinning before Jeff McNee scored for Lucknow from Luke Van Osch and Rick Andrew. Dinning made it 4-1 early in the second period with O'Krafka getting the assist. However, Lucknow got to within one by the end of the period as McNee scored from Andrew and Bob Raymond tallied from Brian Stanley. McPherson restored a two-goal lead for Wingham with O'Krafka getting the assist. Wingham went on a power play, pressed too hard and gave up two brcak-aways, but James Needham was equal to the shots to preserve the two-goal margin. Wingham took a penalty in the final three minutes of the game and Lucknow did not pull their goalie for a two skater advantage. Dinning on a solo rush, made it 6 - 3 late in the game. The opening game was all Wingham as Justin Campbell and Glassier, fired two goals apiece. Jamie Chester and O'Krafka added singles. Blyth Atoms take it to the end The Blyth Atom Rep hockey club season came to an end on March 3 in Wallace Twp. The Blyth squad were eliminated by Wallace in three games in the WOAA finals. Blyth did not go without a fight, being in every game against a well-balanced Wallace Club. Blyth dropped the first game of the series 3-2. Andy Toll scored both Blyth goals with assists going to Tyler Kernighan, Ryan McClinchey and Mike Bean. In game two in Blyth the teams put on a defensive show. Wallace scored late in the first period and that score held up until Wallace scored again with three minutes left in the game. They added an empty- net goal to win 3-0. Blyth returned to Wallace for game three. Blyth were trailing 4-3 when Wallace scored on a breakaway with 1:06 left in the game. Blyth seemed to be back in the game when they scored in the next shift, only to have it waved off by an early whistle. That ended Blyth's comeback as Wallace scored an empty-net goal and added another with 17 seconds left. Cole Stewart scored twice for Blyth and a single went to Steve Van Amersfoort. Kirk Stewart chipped in three assists along with Micah Loder and C. Stewart. Eric Jarrett and Justin Peters provided stellar goaltending in a losing cause. Team officials, Chad Haggilt, Doug McClinchey and Barney Stewart, would like to thank the boys for a great season.
