Issue frustrates reeve By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Talk of amalgamation brought feelings of frustration to the table at Brussels council on March 10. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White presented council with the informa tion for a proposed Huron Perth Public Utilities Commission. "They feel a county-wide PUC could offer a viable service rather than a province-wide one," said White. "Basically, I'd have to say it boils down to the lesser of two evils." Reeve Gord Workman replied, "There is no way we can have PUC service in this town cheaper than we are providing it right now." While said that she agreed the municipality was running efficient ly but added "(the province) is just not going to leave us alone." In response to a letter from East Wawanosh, she asked whether council wanted to send a represen- Surplus Continued from page 1 projects not completed. The Medical/Dental Centre board also showed a surplus, of $2,824. Loree said there was a "lot more activity" at the Brussels Cemetery last year which contributed to a sur plus of $7,315. The BMG Catering Group has a surplus of $4,700, while the surplus for the Homecoming Committee is $4,500. Total equity for the village, in surplus, reserves and reserve funds is $608,063. The reserves he said, are "quite satisfactory for a work ing capital". Loree credited Clerk-Treasurer Donna White and Deputy-Clerk Lori Pipe for their work. The books, he said, presented fairly what has happened in the munici pality over the past year. "I found the books to be in excellent shape, some of the best I've seen. And I’m . not just throwing that out. It's true." Councillors in turn congratulated the staff on a job well done. tative to a meeting with other north Huron municipalities regarding restructuring. Councillor Ralph W atson agreed to attend. "My ideas have not changed. If they (the province) are going to come and force us to do this, then do it. Whatever will be, will be. The people who are running this show will make what they think it takes to run this county and there will be people without a nickel of - representation," said Workman When councillors questioned how the province thinks there would be any savings in having the 'staff required to run such a large municipality after amalgamation, White said she believed there would be one clerk and then lower paid support staff. Anything else, she said, would not likely be approved. "I've been to Toronto often enough I won't be brainwashed and I don't want you to be," said Work man. "There's not one of them (Ontario government representa tives) who knows what they're talk ing about.
