"The south and west concessions were left intentionally low to allow for an outlet if the water levels got too high," said Michie. "I'm sure (Elston) is not the only one who has had a problem this year." In a phone interview Monday morning, Morris Twp. Reeve Bert Elliott said he sees "no problem" with the reconstruction of the road. "The water did exactly as the engi neer said it would. (The work) was done so there was no damage to the bridge and I understand, the water never got very high (on the outlet roads)." When asked about the ice on Elston's property, Elliott said he hadn't seen the ice and that it was an issue for the insurance company to deal with. "I don't see any difference from the plowing of the roads in the win ter," said Elliott. He is also fondly remembered as a supporter of the Blyth Festival who always sat in the front row and tapped his cane to applaud. His own story was brought to the Blyth stage in the 1980 production of The Life Thai Jack Built. Two years later, when the Festival was remounting Quiet in the Land, the story of an old order Amish community by Anne Chislett, McLaren's artwork was chosen for the poster. Quiet in the Land had premiered at the Festival in 1981, received rave reviews, subsequently went on tour and won both the Chalmers Canadian Play Award and the Governor-General's Award. The poster became a favourite of Festival-goers and framed copies adorn the walls of many of their homes. With a new production of Quiet in the Land opening the Festival's 1997 season June 20, a decision was made to revive the poster artwork too. The 1997 poster, with a fresh look by Linda McMaster/ Design, was officially unveiled at the end of February with poster sponsor representatives from Blyth Printing and Howick Mutual Insurance Company, Wroxeter in attendance. The poster will be used to promote the Festival’s 1997 season and it is anticipated that it will become a popular souvenir item again.
