Huronlea welcomes special new residents
By Olive Sproul
We've had some excellent
entertainment during February,
including the arrival of two half
grown kittens, which has often
caused a minor traffic jam, as
residents, and their visitors, arrived
at the Craft Room, eager for a
glimpse of our newest toys! Sarah
Barbour, who has a special knack
with cats, was put in charge of the
two newest members of Huronlea!
The two kittens are a pretty pair.
One is white and finely built. The
other, which I call Sylvia, looks
much like the comic strip cat which
is always after Tweety Bird.
For the first three or four days,
they did little but hide; they even
ate and drank very little. The
strange place and so many strange
people had them almost scared into
fits. Gradually however, they're
coming around.
Busy weeks for students
A BUSY WEEK AT BPS
By Tamara Mason
and Kate Kuepfer
On Friday, Feb. 28 the Grade 7/8
class went cross-country skiing at
Jorritsma's farm. Students brought
their own skis and have been skiing
around the school area.
They left school at 11:20 a.m.
and returned by 2:30 p.m. Thank
you to Amber Park, Eileen Exel,
Nicole Lowe, Lance McLellan,
Chrissy Mason, Richelle Jorritsma,
Kendall Jutzi, Nicole Bernard and
Lesley Pepper for making this
outing happen. We would also like
to thank the Jorritsmas for for being
good hosts by letting us use their
land. Despite the rain, they still
managed to have snow on their
trails.
A holiday dance is being held on
Thursday, March 6 for the Grade
7/8 students. The dance runs from
2:45 to 4:30 p.m. The Grade 7/8
students from Zurich Public will be
attending this "Revenge of the 60s"
bash. We would like to thank Katie
Clark, Jen Cowan, Tim Harrison,
Steve Todd, Rob McKercher, Matt
Elliot, Shannon White, Mike
Walker, Jen McDonald, Trish Teeft
and Kate Kuepfer for organizing
this event and making decorations.
On Sunday, Feb. 23, the Brussels
Band played at the Presbyterian
Church. The program included
songs such as Chorale And
Recessional, Chorale 43, and
Westwind Overture. We had four
students doing a quartet, Trish
Teeft sang, Katie Clark played the
flute, Cody Nichol played the
guitar and Kate Kuepfer
accompanied them on the song Thy
Word. We would like to thank the
students on their hard, dedicated
work.
Laurie Trower and Janna Speers
have been giving cooking lessons
to the Grade 7/8 students. Every
Wednesday a group of students
walk down to Laurie Trower's
house where she teaches them to
cook. The first group of students
made Mexican food. Thank you to
them both for their time and for
teaching us new skills.
Mrs. Clark and Ms MacDonald
attended a training program on Feb.
28. Here, they learned about Grade
3 assessment that will be taking
place in April.

Jesus Is Lord
Guests Welcome
Our Nursing Director Marjorie
Duizer has safely returned from a
dream vacation. She and her
husband just spent a marvelous
month in New Zealand, which is in
the middle of an idyllic summer.
While we were battling snowdrifts,
wondering if enough of the nursing
staff would be able to make it to
work, Marge was picking flowers
and sunning herself in her new
bikini. At least that's what we've all
been accusing her of. We're just
green with envy. I'm sure no one
deserves an excellent holiday more
than her.
Speaking of vacations, Don
Dunbar bade us a fond farewell,
announcing that he'll not be back
for a couple of months. He's off for
a month in Hawaii. We wish him
Godspeed and happy sailing. He's
been so good to come and entertain
us, that we can do no less.
On Tuesday Mrs. Whyte is
taking a few Grade 7 students to
Wingham for a conflict and
resolution program.
Rob McKercher and Steve Todd
organized a three-on-three
basketball game. The students have
done a great job at organizing the
games and teams. We would like to
thank the students in participating
in these team sports.
Mr. Teall's Grade 4/5 class have
been working on VIP which means
Values, Influences and Peers. This
is teaching them to make decisions
that have good consequences.
Wrestling on ice
It appears that the Brussels Juvenile and Creemore
player have forgotten which sport they are participating in
as the two squads met in the playoffs Friday. Brussels is
down two games in the series with the next matchup
March 7, at home.

February was a busy month. On
Tuesday, Feb. 18, Phyllis Mitchell
and friends entertained in the
morning and, in the afternoon we
saw Lome Hunking's video, which
immortalized the saga of the six-
horse hitch, a team of beautifully
matched chestnut Belgians, each
over a ton in weight. They crossed
the continental U.S.A, from sea to
shining sea, in small increments of
10 miles a day, pulling a heavy
wagon, the type used to haul kegs
of beer and ale years ago.
Feb. 20 was an important date for
two of our residents. It is the
wedding anniversary of Adeline
and Jack Beattie. It marks 65 years
of love and devotion. They were
proud of the congratulatory letter
received from Jean Chretien, the
prime minister. Affectionate best
wishes go out to the illustrious pair.
Kathy Bridge was here for crafts.
We made peanut butter cookies
(and ate them too). They were
delicious!
As usual Friday was marked by
mental aerobics in the morning and
Bingo in the afternoon. Saturday
was Marion's Music featuring
Marion Eadie at the piano in the
sitting room. Sunday, Feb. 23
featured Lieut. Pitlock leading the
service in the chapel. Wednesday
saw the Old Tunes in concert. After
supper we were entertained by The
Cavan Cloggers. The performers
ranged in age from perhaps 40 to a
four-year-old boy, who was so cute
everyone wanted to hug him. There
were five or six age groups who
demonstrated -differences in
technique and difficulty. Some of
the youngsters played piano solos
and two of the teenage girls sang
contemporary songs. The eldest girl
of about 15, sang two popular new
country lunes. A second girl sang a
song as well.
