This occasion celebrated 100 years since the founding of the first Women's Institute. All members present were called forward for a group photo before a pot luck meal was enjoyed. There were 60 in attendance consisting of members and guests. A lovely arrangement of candles and fresh flowers, featuring the blue and gold WI colours, graced the buffet table. After the meal the meeting opened with the Opening Ode, the Mary Stewart Collect and singing of O Canada, with Mary Coultes as pianist. Dianne Robinson was convenor for this meeting with the motto of the day being "Celebrate the Past ... Challenge the Future". She welcomed everyone and gave background information on the Women's Institute history. Topics covered were the story of Adelaide Hoodless, Erland and Janet Lee, minutes of the original meeting, history of the motto "For Home and Country", background of the badge, the WI grace and the Collect, the founding of FWIC, the newsletter, the founding of worldwide ACWW and Lady Tweedsmuir. Members taking part in reading these background items were: Dorothy Coultes, Wilma Higgins, Nancy Jardin, Mary Hunter, Ivy Parish plans directory Welcoming worshippers at Knox United Church on Sunday, Feb. 23 were Charles and Grace Procter. Dust and Ashes Touch Our Face and Pass It On were the chosen hymns for songtime. This was followed by silent meditation, the Call to Worship and the Prayer of Approach repeated in unison. The mixed senior choir sang O Give Thanks Unto the Lord accompanied by Elizabeth Procter at the organ. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden read Hebrew scriptures from Genesis 17: 1-7, 15-16 followed by the congregation singing Give Me Oil. The children gathered in the front pew. Their lesson centred around "The Rainbow Grows". To the rainbow, the word "choice" was added to the word "remember", which was written last Sunday. God had a special plan for Abraham telling him move to a new land, Rev. Hobden said. Abraham, and his wife, Sarah, packed up everything they had and chose a new place to live. God made a promise to Abraham that he would have many children and God gave him land. Abraham knew that he had made the right choice by following God and trusting him. "God is always with us and if we make the right choice God will always be with us taking care of us. Ada Taylor gave an outline of the Belgrave branch's history over the 86 years since it was formed. She touched on highlights and achievements, then read the minutes of an early meeting. A cook book was on display that was printed in 1932. Her information as Tweedsmuir curator was enlightening and enjoyable and gave a glimpse into past times. Mrs. Taylor was presented with a book and thanked for a job well done by president Audrey Fenton. This closed the portion of the meeting devoted to remembering the WI heritage. A brief business meeting was then held with roll call being "What I Have Accomplished with Women's Life Skills." Thanks to Ada Taylor and Ivy Cloakey for doing the set up for the potluck meal. The commemorative afternoon drew to a close with the singing of the WI's centennial song and God Save The Queen. The next potluck will be on Tuesday, March 4 with a musical program planned. Everyone is welcome to attend this event that starts at 12:15 p.m. We, including children, all have to make choices in every day living just as Abraham did," Rev. Hobden said. After prayer the children adjourned downstairs for Sunday School. Laurie Procter and Becky Logan were in charge of nursery. Psalm selection was taken from Psalm 22: 23-31 and the gospel lesson from Mark 8: 31-38.
