Timothy Findley’s work
premieres on Blyth stage
The Blyth Festival is proud to
present the world premiere of The
Piano Man's Daughter...and Others
on stage Wednesday, April 23. This
unique production combining
literature, theatre, music, song and
dance is based on three of award
winning Canadian author Timothy
Findley's books - the novel The
Piano Man's Daughter, the novella
You Went Away and his new
collection of short stories Dust to
Dust. It kicks off a 1997 spring
tour.
As a child, Findley grew up with
pianos. As an artist, he grew up in
the theatre. He will re-enter the
theatre at Blyth with The Piano
Man's Daughter as author, actor
and amateur pianist in an evening
of words and music which will also
star dancers Veronica Tennant and
Michael Sean Marye, singer Sylvia
Tyson and composer/pianist Joe
Sealy.
These performers will all be
under the creative leadership of
Paul Thompson who directed and
helped create last year’s Blyth hit
Barndance Live! and choreo
graphers David Earle and Danny
Grossman.
Both Tyson and Findley have
performed o® the Blyth stage
before - Tyson as a solo artist and
with the group Quartette and
Findley as a guest author at the
Blyth Festival Book Sale in 1995.
Findley read selected passages
from The Piano Man's Daughter at
that time. His play, The Stillborn
• 1 1 • s
Lover, has been produced at The
Grand in London, the Stratford
Festival and Theatre Passe Muraille
in Toronto.
Findley will be available after the
performance at Blyth to autograph
copies of his books which will be
for sale.
This one-of-a-kind evening of
entertainment gets underway at
8 p.m. April 23. Tickets are avail

1996 Festival hit
‘Barndance Live’
back for 2nd run
Continued from page 1
Lee Melville arrive at their
childhood cottage for a weekend of
fishing and beer. Lee, a quiet
responsible married man, hopes to
get Owen, his irrepressibly lively
brother, to face some serious news
about the future with realistic
maturity. But before they can get
the junk food unpacked, Owen has
hailed two beautiful women
boating on the lake who burst into
their weekend retreat, creating
unexpected mayhem, delightful
temptations, tears and laughter.
Barndance Live! another
collective and hit of the 1996
season, returns for two and half
weeks this year, starting Aug. 26.
This is a marvelous musical tribute
to the stars who made the CKNX
Barn Dance a huge hit on radio,
stage and television. The play
unfolds like magic with heart
warming stories, beloved old-time
music and comic sketches. A real
toe-tapper not to be missed!
The Blyth Festival's 1997 season
will also include a one-woman play
on the second stage in The Garage.
Overboard!, written by Deborah
Kimmett who also plays all the
parts, is about a funny, exasperated
woman juggling marriage, children,
and a successful career in
advertising. When she wins a
Caribbean cruise, she can’t wait to
escape the hectic demands of her
life. Instead she is corralled on the
trip by a series of bizarre characters
loaded with advice. This inspired
tour de force runs Aug. 12 - 23.
All plays run in repertory except
Barndance Live! and Overboard!
For a complete schedule and more
information, contact the Blyth
Festival Box Office at (519) 523-
9300. The Box Office opens to
members April 1 and to the general
public April 15. Tickets range from
$6 to $20. Money-saving coupon
packages are still available.
Order a four-coupon package
before April 1 and receive a 1997
season poster and a chance to win
one of three $100 vouchers towards
accommodation at the Little Inn,
Bayfield.
