THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19,1997 B elgraveThe news from Compiled by Linda Campbell Phone 357-2188 Churches hold annual meetings The annual meeting of Knox United Church, Belgrave was held following lunch on Sunday, Jan. 26 in the church basement. There were 28 members present. Murray Scott chaired the meeting with Joanne Robinson as secretary. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden reviewed the church records. Lome Campbell discussed the budget during the treasurer's report. He mentioned how much had been paid off on the mortgage. The Mission and Service objective was set. The election of officers went as follows: elected to session, Mary Thomas; board of stewards, Tony Chaffe and Alison Wightman; trustees, George Procter; ministry and personnel, Mike Cottrill; lay delegate, Bill Coultes, who will remain on manse committee. Memorial Fund will stay the same. Auditor is Ruth Haines and the pulpit supply committee will also remain the same. Rev. Hobden reported that "The Observer" is being sent to 94 families. It was agreed to continue with the every family plan. A new nominating committee to fill vacancies was set up. It consists of Murray Scott, Tony Chaffe and Brian Potter. It was agreed that the country social be held on Saturday, June 21 at the arena. The name is to be changed back to the Country Fayre. The visitation committee, which consists of Mabel Wheeler, Bill Coultes for Knox, and Gloria Dow for Calvin-Brick, will remain the same. Murray thanked Rev. Hobden for all her work, guidance and support during the previous year. He also Guides entertain UCW 1st Belgrave Girl Guides had special guests at a Valentine Party on Thursday, Feb. 13. Seventeen members of Belgrave UCW joined the Guides for a crokinole tournament ar.d Valentine treats. High scoring crokinole players expressed sympathy on behalf of the congregation on the loss of her father-in-law. Everyone, who has served in any capacity for the betterment of the church, was thanked by Murray. Rev. Hobden also thanked everyone for all the love and support shown to her and her family during the previous year. She handed out information on the upcoming photo directory. Pictures will be taken on March 13 - 15 in the basement of Knox. The next annual meeting will be held on Sunday, Jan. 25. Murray adjourned the meeting. Knox United Church choir held their annual meeting and social in the Belgrave Church schoolroom on Feb. 10. Twenty people enjoyed an evening of games and food. Prizes went to Ruth Gordon, Freda Johnston, Bill Coultes and George Procter. Mr. Procter gave the treasurer's report. New committee members are Ruth Gordon and Dorothy Coultes. Elizabeth Procter was presented with a gift for her many hours as choir organist. Mabel’s Moms meet Mabel's Moms met <J. their regular time on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Those who attended were: Kim Higgins and Laura; Elaine Scott and Peyton; Debbie Appleby and Britanny; Connie Shiell, Christopher, Andrea and Lindsay; Alice Yuill and Brianna. Their topic was "Fortune Tellers". were Barbara Anderson with 230, and Nicole Meier with 320 points. Low scores were Ashley Warwick and Irene Lamont. It was a great mixer and the girls wish to it again. UCW meets at Vincents The Afternoon Unit of the UCW met Feb. 11 at the home of Mrs. Edith Vincent with an attendance of 10. Audrey Fenton opened the meeting with a short poem entitled "Help Wanted". The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved. A letter from RBC Ministries was read thanking the unit for the donation. Janisa Coultes distributed "The Mandate" and told of some articles she found quite interesting. Ida Procter conducted the worship Family weekends in Grand Bend Marjorie and Alexandria Stopforth of Oakville visited last Tuesday and Wednesday with her mother Beth Procter. There was no euchre on Wednesday, Feb. 12 due to stormy weather conditions. There will be euchre again on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. in the Women's Institute Hall. There were nine tables of shoot in play on Friday, Feb. 15 in the Belgrave Community Centre. Winners were: high lady, Lillian Appleby; second, high lady, Ruth Johnston; most shoots, Agnes Bieman; low lady, Ida Procter; high man, Jack Taylor; second high man, Helen Martin; most shoots, Ross Taylor; low man, Ross Anderson. Everyone enjoyed delicious desserts. The next shoot party will be on Friday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m. Ashley Irwin of Ashfield Township spent last weekend at her grandmother's, Betty Irwin, and celebrated her 11th birthday on Saturday. Mrs. Vincent was in charge of Bible Study continuing with the book of Matthew, chapter 12 verses 22 - 29. Olive Bolt presented a very interesting article entitled "The Swallows of Capistrano." It was written by Lydia Bruton, a cousin of Olive's. Mary Hunter, Mrs. Fenton and Mary Taylor thanked the unit for cards they had received. Mrs. Vincent served a delicious dessert and tea. A time of fellowship was John, Linda, Jeremy and Justin Campbell and a friend, Marc Alexander spent last weekend at Grand Bend. The School Advisory Council meeting is' being held on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at the East Wawanosh Public School. All interested parents are invited to attend. A delicious pot luck supper was enjoyed by members and guests. Following supper, everyone was entertained by a musical selection from "Sister Act", led by Rev. Mary Jane Hobden. The audience was invited to join in a sing-a-long. The guest speaker, Jim Papple of Seaforth, spoke about his involvement with the Canadian Food Grains Bank. He showed slides of his trip to Africa with the CFGB. Sheila Nixon and Maureen Hopf conducted the worship service. Hymns Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah and Abide With Me were sung. Scripture reading was from Ephesians 3: 14-21. Sheila Nixon read a selection about "Living in Harmony with One Another". President, Ruth Gordon, con­ ducted a short business meeting and closed the meeting with prayer. Bell's Pizza Riverboat Restaurant Wingham Golf & Curling Club Belgrave Variety Madill skiers advance to finals Eight members of the Madill Cross-Country ski team have qualified for the all Ontario high school championships scheduled for North Bay. The senior boys' and girls' teams won gold medals and also took the combined champion­ ship held last Tuesday in London. The junior boys finished second to qualify for the OFSAA and the junior girls finished in third place. Three Madill skiers won individual medals. Janice Good was silver medalist in the junior boys 6.2 km. race, and Sjaan Gerth took the bronze medal in the same event. Janet Lisle took the bronze medal in the junior girls 3.1 km. race. The individual Madill results of the WOSSA meet were as follows: Junior Girls, 3.1 km., Janet Lisle, third, 9.44 minutes; Melina Hussey, 13th, 11:23; Deborah Pike, 15th, 12:43; Heather Ballagh, 20th, 14.50; Kim Schedler, 25th, 16:19.
