The defence broke down for the home team in the Feb. 13 game, allowing nine goals while scoring only one, when they were surprised by a very aggrssive opponent. Goalie Jeff Elliott received a mountian of shots, doing his best to keep his team in contention. Blyth's lone goal was scored by Darcey Cook with the assist going to Brett Bean. The players came together as a team in the Feb. 16 matchup, with determination carryng them through to a victory. The Bulldogs stormed back after falling to a two-goal deficit by the end of the first. Three quick goals in the second boosted them to the lead. See-saw scoring continued Atoms win The Blyth Atom Houseleague squad took to the ice Feb. 13, in Blyth, against Elma-Logan, in round-robin play. Off goals by Cody Anderson and Tyler Kemighan, Blyth took a 2-0 lead into the second period. The strong defense allowed the team to push three more over the line for a 5-0 tally by the end of the frame. Anderson earned two points while Kyle Campbell added the fifth netter. Justin Peters grabbed a shutout in net as his teammate, Trevor Koehler, scored the sixth goal. Assists were earned by Anderson (two), Neil Salverda, Nathan With­ erspoon, Markus Redmond and Peters. In their second contest, Blyth took on Zurich on their ice. While the game was much closer, Blyth still scored first before the first period ended, off the stick of Anderson. Campbell got the assist. The squads traded goals through much of the game, resulting in a Zurich 3-2 lead by mid-third peri­ od. In a solo effort, Anderson tied the game with four and a half minutes remaining, then pushed his team ahead just nine seconds later. The clincher came in the final minute when Anderson, assisted by Witherspoon, bulged the twine for his fourth of the game. The other Blyth scorer was Kemighan. Peepees lead series The Wingham Legion Peewees travelled to Milverton last Friday and returned home with a 3-1 victory and a one-game lead in the second round of playoffs. It was the first playoff game for the Wingham squad as it had received a first round bye. Milver­ ton eliminated Clinton to reach the next round of playdowns. Jamie Chester scored the first Wingham goal unassisted. Kent McPherson gave Wingham a 2-0 lead with help from Garrett Skinn. Justin Campbell scored the final Wingham goal assisted by Matthew Dinning and Jake Henderson. Nathan Matheson was the lone goal-getter for Milverton. The next two playoff games are to be played at the Lockridge Memorial Arena, Sunday, Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Combined with a 7-2 exhibition win over Lucknow, the Legion Peewees are undefeated in 10 games. throughout the game, with Blyth coming out the victors as the last goal of the game determined the winner. Blyth tallied six to Mitchell's five. Mitchell, having pulled their net- minder in the final minute, had a tremendous opportunity when three players went in alone on Blyth Brussels Atoms win 6-4 In exhibition play, Brussels Atoms met Seaforth, Feb. 14. Off an early goal by Tyler Camp­ bell, assisted by Patrick Rushton, Brussels carried a 1-1 tie into the second. The team got fired up in the mid­ dle frame, smashing three over the line while allowing just one for the opponent. Goals were scored by Brandon Blake (two) and Nic Campbell. goalie, Elliott. "With less than 20 seconds remaining, Elliott (The Cat) stymied the attack with his lighten­ ing-fast reflexes." said Coach Steve Cook. The third game of the series is Thursday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. in Blyth with the return trip to Mitchell, Feb. 23, at 5:15 p.m. Assists went to Kyle Stephenson, Tyler Campbell and Robbie Sem­ ple. Zurich made a strong effort to get back in the game in the third, scor­ ing at 1:08 and :50, but Blyth had built a four goal lead. Third period goals for Blyth were tallied by Blake and Tyler Camp­ bell. Stephenson got his second assist. The final score was 6-4. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19,1997 PAGE 11.
