Tempting tidbits
Kyle Stephenson was just one of many residents who
partook of the delicious foods offered by the congregation
of St. John's Anglican Church, Brussels, on Pancake
Tuesday.
The big thing on Wednesday,
Feb. 12 was a sleigh ride at the
farm of Mr. Ken Shortreed. We
were almost forced to cancel
because of bad weather. However,
it was beautiful in the bush, which
is where most of the sleigh ride
took place. We drove to Mr.
Shortreed's farm where we
transferred to a sleigh, pulled by a
beautiful team of horses. They

opening ceremonies the secretary
and treasurer's reports were given.
It was reported that Rae Crawford
was home after being in the
hospital for a few weeks. Members

a Gladsome Mind. Ida Evans gave
two humorous readings, "I
Dreamed Last Night" and "The
Train". Jeanette read several stories
that had good messages, "Step
Right Up", "My First Grandchild,"
"Heading in the Right Direction"
and "The Little Boy and The Old
Man". Some of the other good
books mentioned were Life After
Death, Two From Galilee, Three
From Galilee and A Lover's
Quarrel with the World.
The hymn Jesus Thou Joy of
Loving Hearts was sung.

Our newest volunteer cribbage
player at Huronlea is 11-year-old
Aaron Richmond, the son of one of
our RNs. He is just starting to play
the game this winter and already he
kept me on my toes when he played
me a couple of games recently.
Alice and Mary played an hour's
of beautiful music on the electric
organ accompanied by piano, on
the first day of the month in the
sitting room. On Monday the
Nashville Rejects entertained. As
usuall they did a tuneful job and we
enjoyed them very much.
On their regular day (the
Tuesday of each month)
buddies visited. We were so
glad to see them. They were under
the care of a new teacher, Sheri-
Lynne MacDonald, daughter of one
of my favourite nursing aids,
Barbara. Their former teacher,
Karen Uhler, also had connections
with Huronlea; she is the
granddaughter of our 102-year-old
resident Elsie Cunningham.
Grace Wilbee sang for us. She
has a lovely voice. It was a real hit
with the residents as she played and
sang older, as well as contemporary
hits, both pop and country. She
played the guitar for part.
There was Anglican communion
that morning.
Roman Catholic Mass is always
on Thursday with Father Joe.
Friday was Chinese New Year's
Day. It seems that we're coming
into the year of the Ox. I always
thought I was a Libra but, lo and
behold, I'm also a Tiger. We
celebrated this event with a lunch
of Chinese food.
The church service was led by
the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
on that second Sunday service.
Their music was excellent.
At the residents' council meeting
Charlotte Davidson, our
chairperson, for the last couple of
years, tendered her resignation
which was regretfully accepted. We
will appoint a successor at the next
month's meeting. The Huron
Strings entertained with their
inimitable musical style.
The treats and some readings and
jokes provided by Blyth Swinging
Seniors helped celebrate the
birthdays of Stanley Hillen, Mrs.
Effie Finley, Mr. Graham Lamont
and Mrs. Vi Howes.

Mrs. Mel Jacklin visited in
London for a few days last week
with her daughter and Barbara and
Tyler Ross.
She also spent some time visiting
her oldest daughter Marlene
Fosberg, then went and visited her
granddaughter, Darlene and her
two girls, one a new great-
granddaughter, Alexis. She
received a surprise phone call while
there from her pen pal of 47 years,
Jean Pearson of Thorndale and
made plans for a reunion this
summer. They have only seen one
another four times, but both write
without fail every Christmas.
