‘Ceilidh’
"Hoot mon! Hae ye no heard?
The Blyth Festival singers are
havin' a Ceilidh.
A wee bit of dancing, a wee bit
of singing and a grand meal are on
the agenda when the Blyth Festival
Singers host their annual Scottish
Ceilidh. The evening of music,
dancing and good food will take
place at the Goderich Twp. Hall in
Holmesville on Saturday, Feb. 22
The sound of the pipes wiil begin
the evening when the doors open at
6:30 p.m. and Geoff Peach of
Blyth, a member of the Clinton
Legion Pipe Band, entertains with
some bagpipe selections.
A hot buffet meal will be served
at 7 p.m., complete with the
traditional address to the Haggis
delivered by George Yeats of
Clinton. The event is licensed
under the LCBO.
Singing and dancing with a
variety of entertainers will be
featured after the dinner. The Blyth
Festival Singers will sing
traditional and modem Scottish and
Celtic favourites, from Loch
Lomond to Fare Thee Well Love.
As well, there will be the popular
audience sing-a-long.
Along with some young highland
dancers, one of the Ceilidh's most
requested items is Scottish Country
Dancing. Rob and Marilyn Parr of
Clinton will lead novices and old
hands through the steps of the
strathspeys, jigs and few reels.
The Festival Singers will also
offer an intriguing selection of
items in the Silent Auction.
Tantalizing food baskets, gourmet
dinners, hand crafted items and
weekend getaways will be some of
the many items to tempt the
bidders.
This is a fundraising event for the
Blyth Festival Singers, a 40-voice
community choir, led by Wade
Whittaker of Stratford. The choir
practices each Monday night in
Blyth and performs several
concerts a year, including various
community events and special
occasions at the Blyth Festival.

Youths meet at Crossroads
PARK THEATRE

2nd
WEEK
This weekend young thespians
converge in Blyth for the annual
Crossroads Drama Festival.
After attending workshops on
Friday, students from five sec
ondary schools will be presenting
six performances, three that night
and three on Saturday night, for
their peers and the general public.
Admission is $10, which entitles
individuals to see all the plays at
Blyth’s Memorial Hall.
Organizer Carol Oriold said •
Crossroads was developed a few
years ago, to give drama students
an opportunity to work in a "real
theatre", while developing their
abilities. Oriold says that in addi
tion to sharing views with each
other, the students have a chance to
appreciate the creativity of the
other participants.
While Crossroads was originally
a competitive festival, it has now
become non-competitive, offering
the students an opportunity to
improve on the same level. "They
realize they can learn from each
other and that they need each other
to learn," said Oriold.
In addition to the inter-relation
with peers, students will also hear
constructive comments from Blyth
Festival's Artistic Director Janet
Amos. The workshops, on such
things as movement drama and
innovation, help them sharpen their
talents as well.
Oriold said that while Crossroads
participants are encouraged to per
form Canadian plays, it is not
mandatory. Each play is expected
to be between 15 and 50 minutes,
and can be student, teacher or pro
fessionally written and/or directed.
Performances begin at 7 p.m. Fri
day night will be Stratford Central's
Unbalanced, Central Huron's The
Raft and Little Sister.
On Saturday will be Listowel
District Secondary School's The
Wall Within, F. E. Madill's Dust
and Deliverance and Goderich Dis
trict Collegiate Institute's Tall
Tales.
