Brussels Juvies open playoffs with solid win Brussels Juveniles opened their OMHA "D" playoffs with Drayton on Feb. 1, with a convincing 6-1 win. In the first period Brussels scored three goals. Tim Machan opened the scoring assisted by Brad Mulvey. Two minutes later Machan found the net, assisted by Jason Kellington. Brussels kept the Junior Girls play to 0-0 finish The Belgrave Junior girls had to settle for a tie and a loss in two games over the past week. The matchup against Walkerton, Feb. 1, was a real defensive gem as the puck didn't cross the goal line until well into the third period. Belgrave scored first at the 11:19 mark when Michelle Cook passed to Michelle Nixon for the netter. Though Brooklyn Wheeler was super between the pipes, making many key saves, Walkerton was able to get two by her. "The girls are looking strong in all areas," said Coach Steve Cook, "which is great with playoffs com­ ing." In what • was probably the strongest game of their season, the girls took on Elma Logan, Feb. 8. With two previous losses to Elma Logan, the girls played a great game, battling to a 0-0 tie. The next series began Feb. 10, against Kurtsville. pressure on Drayton as Cory Campbell notched one assisted by Tim Stricker. The period ended with a 3-1 lead. In the second period Grant Jarvis scored assisted by Machan and Mulvey. Then Kellington dented the twine assisted by Machan. In the third Dean Walker finished the scoring assisted by Tim Powell. On Saturday, Feb. 8 Brussels travelled to Drayton for game two and returned home with a hard fought 3-2 win. Cory Campbell opened the scoring assisted by Stricker and Powell. In the second Mike Dauphin scored assisted by Stricker and Machan. Drayton replied with two of their own to end the second tied at two. The only scoring of the third was the Fischer brothers with Brett putting the puck on the stick of Clint at the red line, who stepped in over the blue line and launched a missile that caught the top comer, giving Brussels a two game lead. The goaltending duo of Jory Elliott and Tom Comer have done an excellent job between the pipes allowing only three goals. If game two was any indication of the type of series this will be, gel ready for fast, hard hitting, good old fashion hockey on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at Brussels. Novice Bulldogs take hard hit Blyth Novice Bulldogs took a hard hit this week, suffering two losses. The first came against Bayfield, Feb. 6. Though the final score was 9-2, Coach Steve Cook said, "The game was not at all as the score indicated. The Bulldogs showed a great effort with strong positional play." Goaltender Jeffrey Elliott contin­ ued his strong play, thwarting many Bayfield chances. Blyth goals were scored by Darcey Cook and Darren Austin. Assisting on the plays were Blake Miller, Josh Albrechtas and Brett Bean. Two days later, the squad met Howick, in an exhibition game, though the score was only marginally better. Blyth came out flying, scoring the first goal when Austin put the puck over the line. Bean assisted. The offense could not hold up as they were downed 6-1. Elliott played an inspired game in net, making several excellent saves and keeping his team in the game. The Bulldogs start playoff action Feb. 13, in Blyth at 6 p.m., then return to Mitchell, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. Gloving it The broomball player seems to look more like a well- protected bowler, having lost his broom during the action in the fast-pace contest. This game was one of the Blyth Broomball League’s tournament contest played in Blyth this past weekend. Both men and women competed in the annual event.
