Brussels Juvies open playoffs with solid win
Brussels Juveniles opened their
OMHA "D" playoffs with Drayton
on Feb. 1, with a convincing 6-1
win.
In the first period Brussels scored
three goals. Tim Machan opened
the scoring assisted by Brad
Mulvey. Two minutes later Machan
found the net, assisted by Jason
Kellington. Brussels kept the

play to 0-0
finish
The Belgrave Junior girls had to
settle for a tie and a loss in two
games over the past week.
The matchup against Walkerton,
Feb. 1, was a real defensive gem as
the puck didn't cross the goal line
until well into the third period.
Belgrave scored first at the 11:19
mark when Michelle Cook passed
to Michelle Nixon for the netter.
Though Brooklyn Wheeler was
super between the pipes, making
many key saves, Walkerton was
able to get two by her.
"The girls are looking strong in
all areas," said Coach Steve Cook,
"which is great with playoffs com
ing."
In what • was probably the
strongest game of their season, the
girls took on Elma Logan, Feb. 8.
With two previous losses to Elma
Logan, the girls played a great
game, battling to a 0-0 tie.
Wheeler continued her strong
play in net.

pressure on Drayton as Cory
Campbell notched one assisted by
Tim Stricker. The period ended
with a 3-1 lead.
In the second period Grant Jarvis
scored assisted by Machan and
Mulvey. Then Kellington dented
the twine assisted by Machan.
In the third Dean Walker finished
the scoring assisted by Tim Powell.
On Saturday, Feb. 8 Brussels
travelled to Drayton for game two
and returned home with a hard
fought 3-2 win.
Cory Campbell opened the
scoring assisted by Stricker and
Powell. In the second Mike
Dauphin scored assisted by Stricker
and Machan. Drayton replied with
two of their own to end the second
tied at two.
The only scoring of the third was
the Fischer brothers with Brett
putting the puck on the stick of
Clint at the red line, who stepped in
over the blue line and launched a
missile that caught the top comer,
giving Brussels a two game lead.
The goaltending duo of Jory
Elliott and Tom Comer have done
an excellent job between the pipes
allowing only three goals.
If game two was any indication
of the type of series this will be, gel

Novice Bulldogs take hard hit
Blyth Novice Bulldogs took a
hard hit this week, suffering two
losses.
The first came against Bayfield,
Feb. 6. Though the final score was
9-2, Coach Steve Cook said, "The
game was not at all as the score
indicated. The Bulldogs showed a
great effort with strong positional
play."
Goaltender Jeffrey Elliott contin
ued his strong play, thwarting many
Bayfield chances.
Blyth goals were scored by
Darcey Cook and Darren Austin.
Assisting on the plays were Blake
Miller, Josh Albrechtas and Brett
Bean.
Two days later, the squad met
Howick, in an exhibition game,
though the score was only
marginally better.
Blyth came out flying, scoring
the first goal when Austin put the
puck over the line. Bean assisted.
The offense could not hold up as
they were downed 6-1.
Elliott played an inspired game in
net, making several excellent saves
and keeping his team in the game.
The Bulldogs start playoff action
Feb. 13, in Blyth at 6 p.m., then
return to Mitchell, Feb. 16 at 5:30
p.m.
Gloving it
The broomball player seems to look more like a well-
protected bowler, having lost his broom during the action
in the fast-pace contest. This game was one of the Blyth
Broomball League’s tournament contest played in Blyth
this past weekend. Both men and women competed in the
annual event.
