THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5,1997 Party favours add spice Many of the guests coming to your wedding have attended various other weddings during their lifetime. So, you probably will want to give them something to make your special day stand out in their memories. There are many different favours you can give your guests, the most common being personalized bud vases, picture frames and silk flowers in vases. It is wonderful for guests to receive wedding favours to help keep the memory of the night alive. Seeing as it takes a lot of thought and time to find the right favour for your wedding, you might as well choose something that the guests will want to take home. There is no sense in buying favours that will be left at the end of the night. No couple wants to be stuck with 50 leftover favours. While there is nothing wrong with giving flower vases, some couples want to give out something <? little more unusual. One way to help ensure that all favours will be taken and enjoyed by guests is to order unique gifts that your guests may not have seen before. Creative favours do not necessarily mean expensive favours. There are plenty out there that you and your guests will enjoy and, surprisingly, cost very little. It improves the chances that every guest will leave with a gift, and that your wedding will be remembered for a long lime to come. Because most couples need to buy between 50 and 100 favours, keeping down the amount spent on them is important. The money you save is money that can be spent on some other aspect of the wedding. The following are fun items that your guests are sure to enjoy, but are not too expensive. • A small box of delicious dark and white chocolates, personalized with the couple's name and wedding date on the box. • A customized mini champagne bottle that comes complete with a label bearing the couple's name, wedding date and a personalized* message. • Glass fortune cookies in which the couple's name, wedding dale and a special message are inscribed on the- fortune. These "cookies" are packed in authentic Chinese food takeout boxes. • Live seedlings ready for planting that can grow strong and last for years to come. These allow you to share your love with a gift that grows. Aside from being unique, they help give something back to nature. • Small fishbowls filled with live goldfish. These pels make a great gift for guests to take home to the lads and, hopefully, can ensure that people won't put it on a shelf and forget about it. Every time they see the fish, they'll be reminded of your wedding. A pet shop should be able to give you a good deal for buying the bowls and fish in bulk. Attendant gifts memorable From the perfect drop earrings to match the bridesmaids' gowns to engraved stemware, attendants' gifts are only limited by the creativ ity of the bridal couple. Gifts for the bridesmaids and groomsmen may be one of the last minute items on the list of things- to-do. However, they are important for thanking those who have helped make your special day a treasured memory. The most common gift for the bridesmaids is a single piece of jewellery or a set which is co-ordi nated with the gowns, said Maria Bakelaar of Bakelaar Jewellers, Wingham. "We ask questions of the bride- to-be to get an understanding of the dresses, other accessories and the budget. We are then better able to advise them on the perfect gift." "Earrings and necklaces remain a popular choice, though broaches or a simple bodice accent for the vel vet dress may be right." A growing trend in attendant gifts is engraved items as a momen ta of the day. These can range from bracelets to glassware or lighters Relaxing helps avoid stress Planning a wedding? Before you fall victim to the stress of trying to ensure that your ceremony and reception will be perfect in every way, read this advice from Miss Manners, also known as Judith Martin, from Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behaviour (Warner Books): A wedding reception is basically a large party and is therefore not perfectable because there are too many variables...Miss Manners' advice to young brides is to plan weddings that will be pretty and festive, but not to attempt to make them grand on a scale unrelated to the rest of their lives, and not to expect them to be perfect. Many an otherwise lovely bride has turned ugly attempting to create a "dream" occasion and to make everyone else conform with her conception of their roles in it. for the men. At Anstett's in Clinton, Dave Anstett said personalized items are common along with pendants, pins, chains with charms, silver or crys tal. For the men, pens, cufflinks and tie bars top the list along with almost anything engravable. The one-stop wedding boutique, Wholesale Jewellers Plus, Goderich offers everything from attendant and anniversary gifts to candles, decorations and cake tops. The wide variety of merchandise has brides-to-be looking from handmade items to pearl necklaces. "We often ask the women to bring in the bridesmaids' dresses (or a sample of the material) so colours can be matched," said Ed Foie. "It makes everything come off well." For the ushers, engraved whiskey flasks are still popular as are cups and tie tacks. "They are trying to make a mem ory."
