Soc. presents awards at meeting Award-winning schoolwork Top calf The Jeanne Ireland Award is presented at the Brussels Agricultural Society banquet to the students achieving the most points in schoolwork exhibited at the annual Fall Fair. Ireland, a retired teacher, stands with this year's recipients, Robbie Semple, Emily Cardiff and Julia Schlumpf, who received their honours at the Society's banquet, in Brussels, Jan. 22. Brussels Agricultural Society had its annual meeting on Jan. 22 at Brussels Legion with 41 guests and members present. Everyone enjoyed a roast pork dinner cooked up by the Legion Auxiliary Ladies. Jeff Cardiff introduced the special guests including Neil McGavin, guest speaker and his wife Marie; Margaret Deichart, District 8 OAAS Homecraft Representative and her husband, Clare; Society President, Dorothy Cummings; incoming Homecraft President, Bev Palmer and Fair Ambassador Keri Anne Nicholson. Margaret Deichart brought greetings from District 8 Director, Lyle Haney, in his absence. She also mentioned upcoming dates to remember: Feb. 18, 19 20 convention at Royal York, Toronto and March 22 workshop in Seaforth. Grey Twp. Reeve and Past Homecraft President Leona Armstrong introduced attending dignitaries. Greetings were brought from Brussels by Reeve Gordon Workman; Morris Twp. by Reeve Bert Elliott; East Wawanosh by Reeve Donald Schultz and Grey by Armstrong. Nicholson presented the school trophies. The Jeanne Ireland Award, given to student with top points in school work was a three- way tie. It went to Emily Cardiff, Robbie Semple and Julia Schlumpf. In the absence of his father, Jeff Cardiff presented the Murray Cardiff Award to Brent Wheeler for having top points in school work and junior section. Trophies for the Belgrave/ Brussels 4-H Beef Club were presented. Jason Howatt received the Grand Champion Steer Trophy, donated by McGavin Farm Equipment. It was presented by Neil McGavin. Rob Archambault received the Grand Champion Heifer Trophy, donated by Brussels Livestock and presented by Marie McCutcheon. Corey Rintoul was absent but will receive the Grand Champion Showman Trophy donated by Dauphin Feed and Supply. GueSt speaker, Neil McGavin compared farming costs and problems from as far back as 1891. He urged everyone to attend "Right to Farm" hearing on Jan. 29. Keeping small fairs alive is a necessity for the next generation children's sake, McGavin said "Volunteers play an important role in this community effort. Keep your attitudes up and remember - If it is to be, it is up to me." Minutes of the 1996 annual meeting were adopted as read. President Dorothy reported a good year all around. Having sponsors pay for advertising in the fair book received a good response and will be repeated this year. Presenting him with his award, at the annual Agricultural Society banquet on Wednesday night, was Marie McCutcheon, an employee of Brussels Livestock, which donates the trophy. Reserved Champ Jason Howatt was the winner of the McGavin Farm Supply Reserve Champion Showman Trophy at the Brussels Fall Fair. Making the presentation at the Agricutlural Society banquet on Jan. 22 was Neil McGavin. The winner of the Grand Champion Showman Trophy, donated by Dauphin Feed and Supply, Corey Rintoul. was absent.
