THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29,1997 SportT Bulls play Patriots in 1st round Sunday afternoon in Clifford is where the Bulls finished their regular season schedule with a 5 - 4 loss to the Mt. Forest Patriots. If the Bulls won, they would face the Hanover Barons in the first round and a loss meant they would face Mt. Forest. The Patriots scored three in the first and added one in the second before the Bulls finally got on t he board. Dan Williams scored on a power-play, assisted by Gary Staples at 7:49 of the second, then the Bulls added another at 2:31 also on a power-play when Steve Henderson scored assisted by Dan Sinclair and Grant Jarvis. The Patriots took a 4-2 lead into the third period which soon became 5 - 2 until late in the third when Josh Alexander scored assisted by Ryan Wright at the 2:38 mark. With Mike DeJong pulled in favour of the extra attacker, the Bulls came to within one when Wright scored assisted by Sinclair with one second on the clock to end the game. Rough week for Blyth Novices It was a rough week for the Blyth Novices, being outscored 12-4 by two opponents. Milverton visited, Jan. 23, ready to play. Though Blyth got on the board first, Milverton quickly retaliated, taking a 2-1 lead into the second. Darren Austin scored Bly th's*-first goal. Milverton notched one in the sec­ ond before the squads traded goals in the third. Austin scored, with the assistance of Luke Anderson, and Brett Bean also added to the tally. The final numbers were 5-3 for Milverton. Blyth Ladies see-saw to win It was a seesaw battle for the Blyth Senior Ladies’ hockey team when Wingham came to town Jan. 26. Blyth got on the board first thanks to a solo effort from Shan­ non Ward. Wingham evened the score four minutes later, taking the squads into the second at 1-1. Amanda Anderson, assisted by Jen Black, scored the only netter of the frame. Blyth Tykes nip Blyth Tykes managed to nip Clinton when they faced off Jan. 20 in Blyth. Brittany Peters and Kendall Whitfield combined for the first two goals of the contest, at 9:55 and 9:20 of the first. Each player scored one and assisted on the other. Trevor McArter also earned an assist. Clinton drew within one before the end of the frame, then evened the score at 11:27 of the second period. The opponents went ahead 3-2 before Blyth was able to get the puck past the goalie. On her first goal of the season, BULLS NOTES: The Western Jr. Cawards banquet was last Saturday night in Hanover with Alexander coming home with the league's Top Defenseman Honours as well as being selected to first team all-star defense. Congratulations Josh! The next game for the Bulls will be the first game of the first round of playoffs against the Mt. Forest Patriots this weekend in Mt. Forest on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. If Sunday's game is any indication the Patriots are in for a rough and tough series against the Bulls. The next home game will be on Sunday, Feb. 2 for game number two, so be sure to come out Groundhog Day to watch the Bulls make like groundhogs and bury the Patriots. Western Jr. C. playoff matchups - Kincardine finishes first, first round bye; Wingham finishes second, plays seventh place Wiarton; Mt. Forest finishes third, plays sixth place Brussels; Hanover finishes fourth, plays fifth place Walkerton. "Jeffrey Elliott had a great game in goal," said Coach Steve Cook, "and the total team effort displayed by each player made for a very entertaining match." The end result was no more pleasant when the squad travelled to Zurich, Jan. 26. Blyth was able to put only one shot past the netminder while Zurich blasted in seven. Kyle Nixon got the lone Blyth goal. Austin and Anderson earned assists. "Elliott had another outstanding game between the pipes," said Cook, "stopping many Zurich chances with amazing blocker and glove saves." Wingham struck first in the final period, again tieing the score. Blyth broke out, pulling ahead by two when Ward and Anderson scored 30 seconds apart. Marci Bie- man assisted on the third goal. Blyth defense held off the attack, allowing Wingham only one more across the line before the final buzzer. The home team earned a 4-3 vic­ tory. from Clinton Heather Schmidt, assisted by Devin Jenkins tied the game at 6:43 of the middle period. Jonathon McDowell popped in the tie-breaker with three and a half minutes remaining in the frame. Whitfield earned the assist. Joel Salverda stood between the posts for Blyth. Atoms lose Brussels Atoms were unable to hold an early lead against Hcnsall, Jan. 24, and had to settle for a tie. Brussels notched the only goal in the first period off the stick of Continued on page 9 Heads up! The puck goes sailing over the top of the Lucknow Juveniles’ goalie, who missed it, but caught a break this time. This contest, the first in a series of seven with the Blyth Juvies was played in Blyth on Sunday. It proved to be a fight to the finish with Lucknow coming out just on top. Blyth Juvies down by 1 The Blyth Juveniles have been, reclassified for playoff action and now move up to play 'C' division teams. Their first series started on Sunday with Lucknow, a team they were one-and-one with during regular season. The series is best of seven with Blyth getting the extra home game. The first game was a close affair all the way with Lucknow coming out scoring first at 7:23 of first period. Just 22 seconds later Mike Salverda scored unassisted from the Wolves take bite out of Crusaders The Ripley Wolves scored three times in three minutes early in the second period for an eventual 6-2 win over the visiting Brussels Crusaders Friday night. Dan McCormick with two, Kevin Stewart, Mike Fair, Mitch Twolan, and Sean Burton scored for Ripley while Greg Mulvey and Brian Campbell replied for Brussels. The teams were tied at one after 20 minutes with Ripley holding a 4-1 lead with one period remaining. Sunday the Crusaders were forced to cancel their Wiarton trip due to a shortage of players. Wiarton has the option of accepting the two points or rescheduling the game. The Crusaders are in Goderich Friday at 8:30 p.m. and travel to Shelburne Saturday. faceoff to tie the score. At 5:35 Lucknow scored to take a 2-1 lead. With 13:14 left in the second period Shawn Gedcke scored to tie the score once more only to have Lucknow score at 7:49 to take the lead into the dressing room for the third period. At 18:55 Lucknow scored to take a two-goal lead for the first lime in the game, only to have Blyth come storming back to tie the score with goals by Nathan Loder, assisted by Brian Currie at 14:10 and by Chris Stewart, assisted by Salverda and PLAYOFFS BRUSSELS BULLS VS MT. Once more Lucknow came back to score two more goals at 11:34 and 10:04 setting the scene for Blyth to do some real work to get back into the game. At 2:03 Stewart scored, assisted by Mark Johnston. This meant a great finish ahead, but Lucknow scored into an empty net with seconds left to take home the game-one victory.
