It was all a matter of timing when Conn Van Vliet questioned Blyth council, Jan 21, on a property tax assessment from 1996. Van Vliet had received an assess ment notice for Part Lot 48 and 49 and all of Lot 50, which had once been adjoined to Half Lot 26, on Drummond Street. The land was divided in 1994, with a portion in his wife's name and the remainder in his own. His section has no access other than a 33-foot, unopened right-of-way. At that time, the assessment was set at $3,000, but jumped to $23,000 by 1996, said Van Vliet. After contacting the Regional Assessment Office, he said the value had been dropped to $4,600 for 1997 because no building per mit would be issued for residential construction on the land. However, he had paid the 1996 taxes at the higher level. Van Vliet requested a refund of approximately $322 from council, following information from the regional office that a recommenda tion for reimbursement would be forwarded to council. Clerk-Treasurer. John Stewart said no written recommendation had been received and after a phone call to the assessment office, he understood none would come. Blyth People Winners of the Blyth euchre on Jan. 20 are: high lady, Mary Turnbull; high man, Norman Turnbull; ladies' lone hand, Jean Plaetzer; men's lone hand, El Lapp; low lady, Lillian Appleby; low man, Vera Hesselwood.
