30 seniors attend meeting
Over 30 Blyth Swinging Seniors
met in the Blyth Memorial Hall at
12 noon on Jan. 22 for their always
delicious pot luck dinner.
President, Lawrence Plaetzer
called the meeting to order after
dinner. The meeting opened by
singing O Canada with Phyllis
Boak at the piano. Happy Birthday
was sung to Isabelle Craig for her
January birthday and Happy Anni
versary to Jim and Erma Mason for
their wedding anniversary. A
belated happy birthday was sung to
Jean Plaetzer and John Hesselwood
for their December birthdays as
there had been no meeting in
December.
A lively sing-song followed led
by Harvey McDowell and Vera
Badley. Next was a musical
selection with Harvey McDowell
on violin, Millar Richmond, mouth
organ, Arnold Cook with the
spoons and Phyllis Boak played the
piano.
John Hesselwood followed this
with some good jokes and gave the
seniors a good laugh for the day.
The business meeting resumed
and the usual reports were given
and approved. An invitation was
read from Huronlea for Feb. 11 to
host the birthday party for the
residents having birthdays that
month. Lunch and program was
arranged.
The meeting was adjourned.

It was all a matter of timing when
Conn Van Vliet questioned Blyth
council, Jan 21, on a property tax
assessment from 1996.
Van Vliet had received an assess
ment notice for Part Lot 48 and 49
and all of Lot 50, which had once
been adjoined to Half Lot 26, on
Drummond Street.
The land was divided in 1994,
with a portion in his wife's name
and the remainder in his own. His
section has no access other than a
33-foot, unopened right-of-way.
At that time, the assessment was
set at $3,000, but jumped to
$23,000 by 1996, said Van Vliet.
After contacting the Regional
Assessment Office, he said the
value had been dropped to $4,600
for 1997 because no building per
mit would be issued for residential
construction on the land. However,
he had paid the 1996 taxes at the
higher level.
Van Vliet requested a refund of
approximately $322 from council,
following information from the
regional office that a recommenda
tion for reimbursement would be
forwarded to council.
Clerk-Treasurer. John Stewart
said no written recommendation
had been received and after a phone
call to the assessment office, he
understood none would come.

"We need a recommendation
from the assessment board, before
we can do anything," added Doug
Councillor Scrimgeour. "It could
set an undesirable precedent if we
reimbursed taxes without notifica
tion."

said- Reeve Mason Bailey, "Howev
er appeals are to be done during the
period of the assessment."
Bailey also noted that several
ratepayers, particularly those with
vacant lots, had complained about
over-assessment.
Van Vliet will discuss the matter
with the Regional Office again.
