We are well into January. Most
of us who made New Year's
resolutions have broken them by
now. They've become second
nature and no longer require self
discipline.
It is also a big, bad, blustering,
boring January. What a month it
has been. There have been more
snowstorms, more school closures,
and more storm-stayed nurses so
far this month than in the whole of
the last two winters put together.
There were mega-birthdays in
January and we had our monthly
party last week, Gladys and the
Merrymakers providing entertain
ment of a heart-lifting kind. Steve
read out the names of the birthdays,
and everyone sang Happy Birthday
to them collectively. The crowd we
were honouring this month are
Millie Blake, Sarah Barbour,
Evelyn Kennedy, Dorothy
McCauley, Raymond Dalton from
Kingsbridge, who still sings
beautifully as he turns 96, Ureanna
Lyons, Levi Carter, Raymond
Fitzpatrick, Edna Evers, Peggy
Larone and Basil Cassidy.
We had one new lady admitted,
Beatrice Hallahan from Blyth.
The library cart is brought around
every two weeks with a selection of
books and magazines, including
many issues of large print Reader's
Digest, which are a popular item
with a good many senior citizens.
Phyllis Mitchell started the year
off with a splash. She brought
friends with her and put on a bang-
up show! Everyone loves Phyllis
because she is so warm-hearted and
cheerful.
Cindy had the beauty boutique a
week into the New Year and gave
some of the ladies a manicure.
Marjorie Duizer, our nursing
supervisor, is away on a dream
vacation. They're flying to New
Zealand, for a month-long visit to
their daughter, whose home is
there. What a beautiful time of the
year to be going to the bottom the
world where it is high summer.
She'll have broken the back of
winter by the time she returns.
The United Church minister
presided over a memorial service
for former residents on Jan. 15 at
which Marjorie, Steve and Cindy
gave a short eulogy of the departed
ones.
We have started our indoor
garden, planting a number of seeds.
There are a number of African
Violets in pretty colours blooming.
Cindy and Steve provide
physiotherapy every weekday
morning for those who can benefit.
They work with them to keep
everyone working or walking.

BPS students debate
By Chris Coulter
and Matt Elliott
Il was business as usual at
Brussels school even with buses
not running on Wednesday, Jan.
22.
On Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 8:15 a.m.,
a group of Grade 8s went to
Clinton High School for a debating
tournament. This group includes
Tricia Teeft, Andrew Garland, Kate
Kuepfer, and Megan Bragg. This
year's topic is "Let it be resolved
that specialization should start in
Grade 7". Specialization refers to
when a student is able to choose the
classes they feel that will benefit
their future career choice. Usually
these choices aren't made until
Grade 10.
The volleyball tournament was
changed to Monday, Jan. 27. We
wish the teams success.
Grade 7 and 8 went curling Jan.
14, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28.
Mrs. Hall is now working full-
time as the kindergarten teacher in
our school.
News and views is each week.
We always have an interesting
program or else some entertainment
comes in the afternoon. This time it
is Adventures in Friendship and we
hold it in the foyer next to the
fireplace. This is a very pleasant
place to hold a meeting. Steve, in
the meantime, is reading poetry to
the folks in the secured area. They
enjoy being read to and most of
them benefit from poetry which
they can relate to, and enjoy.
Friday morning this week and
next, we'll be having a special
ladies breakfast served in the
tenant's dining room. It's great fun.

RRSP TIPS
FOR 1997
7.
Continued from last week...
If you don't have a lump sum to invest, monthly savings plans are
available for as little as $50 per month and can be deducted
automatically from your bank account.
If you name your spouse as beneficiary, assets can be transferred
tax-free to an RRSP or RRIF in his or her name. A financially
dependent child or grandchild can also be named as beneficiary in a
similar, but more restrictive way.
Think long term and choose the best possible return for your RRSP.
10. Transfer your vested pension benefits to a 'locked-in' RRSP, if
you're retiring early or changing employers.
11. Invest severance payments in your RRSP.
12. 'Rollover' payments from a Registered Pension Plan or Deferred
Profit Sharing Plan to an RRSP.
13. Work with an independent financial planner who does not rely on
one financial institution's products and can therefore offer top rates
and products. As a result, you receive unbiased advice.
