The Citizen, 1997-01-22, Page 18PAGE 18. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1997 For Teens, By Teens Exams equals stress By Mark Nonkes As I lay my notes out in front of me, I see page after page of endless writing. There must be a hundred pages. In four days I write the exam and I don't know a single answer to the questions on the seven pages of review sheets. Either I'll have to study for the next four days or be extremely sick so I won't have to write the exams. Or maybe I could fly to the Caribbean and forget about them. No, I'll be writing them and I'll start studying right after this TV show. Right after I go to town...what happened to all the time I had four days ago? Now, I have the next three hours to learn an entire semester of notes. I'm stressed from exams’! Help me. All I want now is to be at home, eating ice cream and sitting in front of the tube. Don't talk to me if you value your life. I'm tired. I have a cold and the coughing won't cease. Stressed out. That's me. Every time exams roll around. I don't have a solution for stress, but the experts do. "Read, exercise, do mental exercises, write a journal, talk to someone, and above all, stay positive." Well, I guess I could try that. Yeah, that sounds okay. But didn't the experts tell me to review my notes every night too? FEATURE ' V ' ** ' Homogeniality reigns So, you think you know a lot about movies, eh? By Ashley Gropp Almost all teenagers strive to fit into the "popular" crowd. By the time they enter high school, teenagers will have entered a world where image and reputation mean everything. Those who mould themselves the right way will likely fit in, but those who have the nerve to be an individual and stay true to themselves will usually become ostracized by their peers. To be popular in high school today, it seems a person must be at least one of the following: outgoing, athletic, attractive and willing to "go with the flow." They often put partying and social life before family and school. Above all, they hide their own opinions when they differ from that of the group. As a result of this, popularity, or the quest for it, causes the loss of a person's true self. High school is a place of homogeniality - everybody tries to be an exact replica of someone in the school they consider cool. This person may often be doing drugs and alcohol as well as smoking. Their grades are generally low and while they may be exceedingly talented, they choose not to participate in school activities. With so many teens trying to be like this, individuality is unheard of. Maybe we should start choosing role models, who promote individuality ... rather than trying to become the same as everybody else.
