People are participating in white cane activities during White Cane Week, Feb. 2-8, 1997. The national awareness week, organized by the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) and The Canadian National Institute for the blind (CNIB), raises awareness about the significance of the white cane. The white cane is not only the international symbol of blindness, but also the symbol of courage and independent spirit. According to Jim Sanders, a white cane user, "Nothing beats the white cane in terms of independence. The white cane is freedom in every sense of the word." Freedom to move Merger discussions between the two health units are continuing smoothly with consulting assistance from KPMG. The Merger Steering Committee is in the process of choosing the name for the new health unit and its organizational structure. Board makeup will be three municipal representatives from each county plus provincial representatives appointed by the Ministry of Health. around confidently, and live independently. Promoted in North America in 1930 by the Lions Clubs Inter national, the white cane is recognized worldwide as the symbol of blindness. White Cane Week, established in Canada in 1947, raises awareness of the white cane - symbol of blindness, courage and independent spirit. All over Canada, blind, visually impaired and deaf-blind people are taking on new roles and accepting new challenges. They are indeed changing what it means to be blind.
