President, Rene Richmond opened the meeting with a New Year's verse. Laura Barbour took the chair for the worship. She read the poem "A New Year's Wish" followed by the hymn How Firm a Foundation. The scripture was taken from Isaiah 54, verses 4 - 10 and the scripture thought was "Predicting the Future." This was followed by prayer by Laura. Luella Mitchell's topic was entitled "Looking Backwards and Forwards." She reflected on some of the things that happened during the year as well as Christmas preparations. "Did we remember that it was Jesus' birth?" she asked. "We did remember the Christ child in our Christmas carols, our White Gift service and Christmas services." Looking forward to the future people make resolutions which they often break. President Helen Elliott opened the meeting with a New Year's thought, followed by the singing of All the Way My Saviour Leads Me. Mary Huether read the scripture, Psalm 91 followed by a prayer led by Isobel Gibson. The message entitled' "Does Hope Spring Eternal?" was given by Isobel Gibson which gave much food for thought. The secretary's report was read by Leona Armstrong in the absence of secretary Thelma Cardiff. Helen Elliott announced the Maitland Presbyterial annual meeting to be held in Wingham on Monday, Jan. 20 and also the Western Women's Conference, June 27-29 at the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The roll call was answered by payment of fees for 1997. Helen Elliott gave a paper on China pointing out the boundaries of China and places of importance Super Bowl Deals on a map.
