Blyth United celebrates Lord’s baptism
It was the "baptism of our Lord"
Sunday at the Blyth United Church
service Jan. 12. The seasonal
colour is white.
Rev. Steve Huntley conducted
the service. Michael Duthie,
director of music was organist.
John and Vera Hesselwood were
greeters. Ushers were Brenda
Brooks, Nicole Kerr and Lori
Brooks. Joan Caldwell looked after
the nursery.
Rev. Huntley opened the
Gathering Together part of the
service with Greetings, Call to
Worship and announcements. This
was followed by the opening hymn,
Holy, Holy, Holy.
The 16-voice choir sang Glory to
the Lord with Mr. Duthie
accompanying on the piano.
For the children's time Rev.
Huntley told the story of the Three
Little Pigs. He said that God wants
them to build their faith and love
strong just like the little pig did
when he built his house out of
bricks.
Herb Shannon read the Old
Testament lesson from Genesis 1:
1-5. The Gospel reading was from
Mark 1: 4-11, delivered by the
minister.
The sermon was entitled, "The
Four Pillars of Faith". Fellowship,
bible study, prayer and worship are
the four pillars, Rev. Huntley said.
Bible study and prayer are similar.
Prayer is being in communication,
"We need prayer in our everyday
lives. The issue of prayer in schools
will not die. How many people who
advocate prayer in schools read the
Bible at home?" he asked.
In closing Rev. Huntley said,
"Can a house really be blown
down? Our house of faith needs to
be strong. It is like a house and
needs continual upkeep!"
The closing hymn was Stand Up,
Stand Up for Jesus.
In hospital are Les Rutledge in
St. Joseph's, London and John
Stadelmann in Clinton.

L. Koch leads worship
Lloyd Koch led the Brussels
Mennonites in worship on Sunday,
Jan. 12.
Mervin Lichty and Anne
Hemingway looked after the
singing. Tim Procter played the
piano for the offertory.
Interim Pastor, Glenn Brubacher
gave the message on "Ministry in a
Change of Time". He said that
interim pastors were somewhat like
John the Baptist, who was there to
prepare the way for someone else.
Mankind has been given memories
which are a series of facts. These
memories get their power from the
feelings that accompany the
memories.
Frustrations come when people
have difficulty in achieving goals.
Frustration will shrivel the fruits of
the spirit. Frustration leads to
spiritual sickness but it can be
lessened through prayer, he said.

Rev. Campbell held the service
on Dec. 15 and Rev. C. Johnson on
Dec. 22 while Lieut. Pittock of the
Wingham Salvation Army
conducted the final service of the
year.
Phyllis Mitchell entertained
Tuesday morning Dec. 17. The
Grey Central School choir arrived
at 1:30 p.m. to entertain with carols
and dancing. They were Grades 5
and 6, yet, they sang two and three-
part harmony beautifully.
There were also a number of
piano solos, and clog dance, as
good as the group I saw on TV the
other evening.
Don Dunbar entertained with
piano recitals and singing. That
would be his last performance in
1996.
We had a Christmas tea, held in
the front foyer with the little tables
covered with fancy red tablecloths
and the tea served in our fancy cups
and saucers, that have been donated
for these fancy does. Graeme
Craig, a son of one of our residents,
Harvey Craig, entertained with a
lovely selection of carols.
We also sponsored a thank you
tea this month for the groups and
single acts who had so kindly
entertained us all through the
previous year.
The Old Tunes hosted first a
Christmas party and a week later, a
New Year's party. They provided a
delicious snack of fresh muffin
halves, spread with cream cheese
and accompanied by cheese
squares, mozzarella and marble, as
well as medium cheddar. These
delicious light snacks were much
enjoyed, along with a choice of
juices.
Everyone who was able, went out
for a special time with their
families sometime during the
holidays. Those unable to visit
outside, were visited by their
relatives. We all had a delicious
turkey dinner, with all the fixings
both Christmas and New Year's
days.
Christmas Day, when lunch was
over, the residents were called into
the sitting room where Santa Claus
(Bonnie Pletch) visited, shaking
hands with all the men and kissing
the ladies, sitting boldly on their
laps.
Later Santa handed out gifts.
The weather was very nasty on
Christmas Day, but by the time
New Year's heaved over the
horizon, it was much better. I was
glad of it since my Toronto-based
son came to visit and thankfully the
roads were in excellent shape. The
slush that had been making the
driving so hazardous, during the
week after Christmas had
(thankfully) melted so that the
roads were, for the most part, bare
and dry!
From all the residents at
Huronlea, Happy, Happy New
Year.
