Three hundred and fifty thousand environment placemats have been distributed to trail
side eateries across the province to help local snowmobile clubs convey the responsible
riding message to Ontario snowmobilers. The initiative is one part of a province-wide
campaign run by the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs during the month of
January.
“The general public has many misconceptions about snowmobiling,” said OFSC
Environment Chair Eldon Somerville. “For instance, noise.
Do they realize that manufacturers have reduced sound levels z^RM^v
by 94 per cent over the years? In fact, it would take 256
current stock sleds operating together at full throttle to equal
the noise level of just one pre-1969 machine!” olAY ON TRAIL^^
Under the OFSC’s “Conserving Ontario’s Last Frontier”
environment banner, each OFSC snowmobiler contributes $1 to a dedicated environment
fund administered by Somerville’s committee. This winter, the campaign theme is “Protect
Our Environment, Stay on Trail” - promoting trail riding as the responsible way to enjoy
the winter wilderness with minimal environmental impact.
“Properly developed and maintained snowmobile trails provide clearly defined corridors
where the majority of snowmobilers choose to ride,” said OFSC General Manager Ron
Purchase. “By discouraging random cross-country riding and moving snowmobilers
efficiently through the backwoods, flora and fauna are not significantly disrupted. There is
even substantial evidence that packed snowmobile trails act as lifelines for weakened
wildlife in search of food and shelter.”
Other components of the OFSC’s January Environment Month include the placement by
Clubs of 4,000 ‘Protect Our Environment* signs at trail heads and the affixing of similar
decals to trail waste bins and outdoor toilets.
“We are doing everything possible to heighten the public awareness that as outdoor
enthusiasts, snowmobilers are doing their part to protect our environment,” said
Somerville. “Trail work is undertaken with the guidance, approval and co-operation of the
Ministry of Natural Resources to assure minimal ecological impact.”
Earlier this fall, the OFSC announced a total of $25,000 in environment grants to local
clubs to assist in environmental analysis, erosion control and seeding projects. Negotiations
are currently underway with a leading university to fund ongoing environmental research
and study program related to snowmobile trails.
The OFSC is committed to a leadership role in fostering the environmentally responsible
development and use of Ontario snowmobile trials through a sustained program of
dedicated funding, research, public education and innovative special projects.
