Blyth United minister talks of gift giving
It was the Second Sunday after
Christmas at Blyth United Church
Jan. 5. Rev. Steve Huntley,
conducted the service. Michael
Duthie, director of music, played
an organ prelude while the
congregation was being seated.
Greeters were Joan and Erica
Clark. Ushers were Harve Snell,
Dick Poore and Brenda and Lori
Brooks. Laverne Clark was
offertory steward.
Rev. Huntley opened the
'Gathering Together' part of the
service with Greetings, Call to
Worship then Introit: Be Still
accompanying on guitar.
As With Gladness Men of Old
was the opening hymn.
Choral anthem His Strength is
Perfect was sung with Mr. Duthie
accompanying on the organ. This
was followed by the children's
hymn, Wisemen Seeking Jesus.
Harve Snell read the New
Testament lesson from Ephesians
1: 3-14. The gospel lesson from
Matthew 2: 1-12 was delivered by
Rev. Huntley.
The theme of Rev. Huntley's
sermon was 'Gift Giving'. He said
"A gift isn't really a gift unless
people take time to receive it. At
Christmas, some children, amidst
all the excitement, barely have a
gift opened when they open the
next one."
He told that the gifts that the gifts
the three wisemen brought to baby
Jesus that first Christmas were
gold, frankincense and myrrh. Gold
stood for royalty and kingship; he
said, frankincense for perfumed
embalming oil and myrrh for great
joy. The Epiphany on Jan. 6 is a
manifestation, Rev. Huntley said. It
sounds morbid, but the Christian
life is more about dying than living.
Dying is living.
In closing Rev. Huntley said,
"What do we give as our gift to
God? Our gift is when we sing our
praises to Him! He Leadelh Me: O
Blessed Thought was the closing
hymn.
In hospital is Les Rutledge in
Clinton.

E. Garland leads worship
Elwin Garland was worship
leader at Brussels Mennonite
Fellowship on Jan. 5. Thelma
Steinman and Christy Pardys were
in charge of the congregational
singing. Christa Knorr gave a
children's story. Destiny Lichty
played a violin solo.
Linda Campbell brought the
message on the topic of
"surrendering to God". There are
certain things people must know
about God to walk in spiritual faith.
They need to know He is good, He
is in control, and He knows better
than they do, Campbell said.
Several; things put up barriers
which prevent Christians from
really surrendering. Some of these
things-are: complaining about
things, fear of letting God into our
lives, the need or desire to control,
and sin.
New Year's was brought in with
a multi-generational celebration at
BMF. In the late afternoon, the
congregation and friends gathered
for a pot luck supper. Ray Martin
then provided transportation via
teams and wagons around the
village, with the arena as the
destination. After skating, people
returned the same way to the
church for a crokinole tournament
and board games.
Pastor Glen Brubacher spoke
during a short worship service
which also included singing
favourite hymns.
Snacks and more fellowship were
enjoyed until the new year arrived.
The youth enjoyed a sleep-over at
the church.
Pastor Glen Brubacher, interim
pastor at BMF, will bring the
message for the next two Sundays.
Linda Garland led the service at
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship on
Sunday, Dec. 29. Elwin Garland
brought the message by playing the
role of Zacheus, the tax collector
who was a new person after his
encounter with Jesus. Thelma
Steinman and Kathy Procter were
in charge of the singing. Manivan
and Phailop Larprom sang a duet as
special music for the service.
New Year's Eve activities were
planned for all ages on Jan. 31. The
youth conducted the Sunday
evening service, Jan. 5.
Sandy McEacheron was the guest
speaker on Sunday, Dec. 22. He
spoke about the three names given
to Mary's Baby - Jesus, Emmanuel
and Christ, and the significance of
each of the three names. Thelma
Steinman was worship leader. A
choir under the leadership of Lloyd
Koch provided special music.
Sunday evening the children put
on a Christmas pageant under the
leadership of Erla Koch. Angie
Koch was pianist for the evening.
The Youth sang during the
performance. Destiny Lichty and
Heather Heipel each played a solo
on her violin. Lunch and fellowship
followed the concert.
The youth were in charge of the
Christmas Eve Service this year.
