THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8,1997 Blyth United minister talks of gift giving It was the Second Sunday after Christmas at Blyth United Church Jan. 5. Rev. Steve Huntley, conducted the service. Michael Duthie, director of music, played an organ prelude while the congregation was being seated. Greeters were Joan and Erica Clark. Ushers were Harve Snell, Dick Poore and Brenda and Lori Brooks. Laverne Clark was offertory steward. Rev. Huntley opened the 'Gathering Together' part of the service with Greetings, Call to Worship then Introit: Be Still accompanying on guitar. As With Gladness Men of Old was the opening hymn. Choral anthem His Strength is Perfect was sung with Mr. Duthie accompanying on the organ. This was followed by the children's hymn, Wisemen Seeking Jesus. Harve Snell read the New Testament lesson from Ephesians 1: 3-14. The gospel lesson from Matthew 2: 1-12 was delivered by Rev. Huntley. The theme of Rev. Huntley's sermon was 'Gift Giving'. He said "A gift isn't really a gift unless people take time to receive it. At Christmas, some children, amidst all the excitement, barely have a gift opened when they open the next one." He told that the gifts that the gifts the three wisemen brought to baby Jesus that first Christmas were gold, frankincense and myrrh. Gold stood for royalty and kingship; he said, frankincense for perfumed embalming oil and myrrh for great joy. The Epiphany on Jan. 6 is a manifestation, Rev. Huntley said. It sounds morbid, but the Christian life is more about dying than living. Dying is living. In closing Rev. Huntley said, "What do we give as our gift to God? Our gift is when we sing our praises to Him! He Leadelh Me: O Blessed Thought was the closing hymn. In hospital is Les Rutledge in Clinton. HURON CHAPEL MISSIONARY CHURCH PASTOR JAMES H. Several; things put up barriers which prevent Christians from really surrendering. Some of these things-are: complaining about things, fear of letting God into our lives, the need or desire to control, and sin. New Year's was brought in with a multi-generational celebration at BMF. In the late afternoon, the congregation and friends gathered for a pot luck supper. Ray Martin then provided transportation via teams and wagons around the village, with the arena as the destination.
