Blyth won the struggle of the puck, if not the stick, capturing a victory over their opponent. Atoms’ Peters earns shutout The holiday season was a very busy period for the Blyth Atoms as they took their 8 and 2 record into tournament play as well as continu­ ing regular games. Blyth met Elma Logan Dec. 20, bringing home a 5-1 win. Both teams were held off the board until the final six minutes of the opening frame when Blylh's Derek Fischer popped one in. Trevor Koehler and Drew Craw­ ford assisted on the play. Elma Logan tied the game before the buzzer sounded. Blyth took control in the second while holding Elma Logan score­ less. Blyth's four goals were scored by Koehler (two), Tyler Kemighan and Fischer. The squad travelled to Mount Forest, Jan. 2 for a tournament, bat­ tling Kincardine in their first Blyth Novices nip Clinton It was a close victory for Blyth when they took on Clinton Dec. 19. Clinton led off the scoring at 1:21 of the second period only to allow Blyth the tieing shot less than six minutes later. Brett Bean put the puck over the line on a nice set up by Darren Austin. It was Austin's turn just minutes later when a sharp wrist shot bulged the twine. He notched the point thanks to great passes by Orie Falconer and Bean. Blyth jumped to a 3-1 lead sec­ onds before the second period buzzer when Bean and Austin joined forces. Clinton came within one at 8:16 of the third before Blyth's Kyle Nixon counterattacked. Nixon took a pass from Josh Albrechtas, skated out of the comer and snapped the winning goal past the helpless Clin- Multiple Sclerosis SOCIETY OF CANADA 1-800-268-7582 matchup. Once again, Blyth could not be held back, taking a 3-0 lead through much of the second period. Goals were scored by Crawford, Ryan McClinchey and Koehler. Nathan Witherspoon and Koehler earned assists. Kincardine slid one past the Blyth goalie before the team launched another assault, blasting three more in the third. Kemighan earned a goal and an assist, McClinchey and Koehler, each netted the puck and Cory Anderson assisted on two scoring plays. The final tally was 6-1. Blyth met a tough opponent in Midland in the next round. The squad put forth a good effort for the entire game, but were defeated 3-2. Blyth goals were scored by ton netminder. Clinton added one more before the end of the frame to finish the game with a 4-3 loss to Blyth. Midland went on to win the championship. It was a very low scoring match when Blyth confronted Seaforth, Jan. 4, in league play. A combined effort by Kemighan and Neil Salverda was the only netter required to win the game. Between the posts, Justin Peters recorded his fourth shutout of the season. "This may have been the best game all season," said Coach Doug McClinchey. "There was end-to- end action, several scoring chances for both teams and both goaltenders played superbly." The next home game will be Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. when Goderich comes to town. tremendous glove and pad saves which held the home team in the contest. The Brussels Crusaders enjoyed a successful holiday season posting a three win, one loss, one tied record over the Christmas and New Year's break. Friday, Dec. 20 Greg Mulvey scored with two minutes remaining for a 5-5 tie in Clinton. Tom McDonald with two, Tim Fritz and Corey McKee also scored for Brussels while Ted Sills, D.J. Deline, and Dean Lawrie with three in a row during second period action, replied for Clinton. The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of 20 minutes, with Clinton holding a 5-3 lead heading into the third period. Saturday, Dec. 21 the Wiarton Redmen scored four unanswered third period goals for a 7-5 win in Brussels. Dean Wheeler, Steve Fritz, Ron Strome, Mulvey and McKee scored for the Crusaders, while Daryl Faust (three), Ryan Thompson, Don Richardson, Jamie Grimoldby and Dave McComb replied for Wiarton. Friday, Dec. 27 McKee tied the game with six minutes remaining, while Strome completed the hattrick 24 seconds later for a 5-4 win in Ripley. Sean Burton with two, Carl Stanley and Jeff Stanley replied for the Wolves who held one goal leads after the first and second periods. Wheeler also scored for the Crusaders who played a penalty-free game. Saturday, Wheeler scored twice for a 5-2 win over the visiting Arthur Tigers. Brian Gampbell, Belgrave Girls eke out win On Saturday, Dec. 21, the Belgrave Junior Girls took on Walkerton in Brussels and edged the visitors 2-1. Coach Steve Cook said, This was a "great game" for both teams. Belgrave opened the scoring at 5:16 of the first period when Michelle Cook picked up the puck in the Walkerton zone, circled behind the net, then in Gretzky-like fashion passed the puck out front to a wide open Brittany Kellington who stuffed it in the Walkerton goal. Saturday, Jan. 4 in Arthur McKee and Campbell cpch scored once in leading the West to an 11-7 win over the East in the sixth annual Senior "A" All-Star Game. Rick Boon, Steve Fritz and McKee all recorded assists, while Pat Cronin claimed the win, allowing four goals over the final 30 minutes. Hugh Nichol and Pete Exel also represented the Crusaders by handling the coaching, managerial and trainer duties for the West. Sunday, Jan. 5 the Crusaders scored four unanswered in the second for a 6-1 win over the Clinton Radar. Greg Fritz, Brad Beuermann, Strome, Boon, McDonald and Mulvey all scored for Brussels with Brian Nigro giving Clinton an early 1-1 tie. The Crusaders played the last 30 minutes with three substitutes after an on-ice incident involving all skaters on he ice. Cronin went undefeated over the festive season (2-0-1) while Tony Smith took the loss, as well as coming off the bench for the Ripley win. The Crusaders travel to Palmer­ ston Friday night then return home to meet the Goderich Pirates Saturday at 7:30. scored to tie it on a nice feed from Kelly Martin. The girls continued the battle throughout the remainder of the game, but it wasn't until the last 17 seconds, that Cook, fresh off the Belgrave bench, took a perfect feed from Kellington and snapped a hard shot that dribbled past the Walkerton netminder, sealing the Belgrave victory. Brooklyn Wheeler saw action in the Belgrave net, making several crucial saves when the girls needed it.
