A 'Blazing' spirit
The students of Brussels PS have been collecting for the
Huron County Christmas Bureau. Following a suggestion
by teacher Joan Perrie, Grade 7 student Matthew
Clarkson got busy and organized the charity drive, which
has brought in clothes, toys and food items in the true
Christmas spirit of giving.
MARK ROBERT WEBSTER
Mark Robert Webster of RR 1,
Varna died at the London Health
Science Centre, Victoria Hospital,
in London on Tuesday, Dec. 10,
1996. He was 20.
Born in Clinton on Nov. 27,
1976, he was the son of Mack
Robert and Janet Eleanor
(Shortreed) Webster.
Mark was a certified chef. He
was a member of Varna United
Church. Mark was a graduate of
Central Huron Secondary School
and graduated from Stratford
Chefs School in July.
Along with his parents, Mark is
survived by one sister, Mary Ellen
Webster of Clinton, and by one
brother, Brian Webster of Varna.
He was predeceased by his
paternal grandparents, Wat and
Ruby Webster, and by his maternal
grandparents, Tom and Ellen
Shortreed.
The funeral service was held at
the Beattie-Falconer Funeral
Homes in Clinton on Friday, Dec.
13, with Rev. Tracy Crick of Vama
United Church officiating.
The flower bearers were Margery
Holmes, Suzanne Stephenson, Jules
Hanrahan and Jason Shortreed.
The honorary pallbearers were
David Rathwell, Sean Dayman and
Tim Gerrits.
The active pallbearers were John
Huether, Jim Shortreed, Rob
Evans, Mark Pennington, Paul Van
Den Dool and Dale Marsh.
Interment in Baird's Cemetery.
MARY LORETTA
McCAUGHEY
Mary Loretta McCaughey,
formerly of Blyth passed away
peacefully in the Wingham and
District Hospital on Dec. 9, 1996 in
her 93rd year.
She was a patient in Wingham
and District Hospital for two
months and a former resident of
Braemar Nursing Home for several
years.
Born in Morris Twp. to the late
John and Bridget (Healy) Phelan,
she was the beloved wife of the late
John Joseph McCaughey, who
predeceased her in 1982. She was
the dear mother of Mary, Mrs.
George Hamm of Blyth. Mrs.
McCaughey is dearly loved by two
grandchildren, Dennis Hamm and
Rosemary Park and six great-
grandchildren. She is also survived
by several nieces and nephews, one
sister, Marguerite Rolls of Stratford
and two brothers, John Phelan and
Gerard and Marie Phelan of
Londesboro. She was predeceased
by one brother Joseph Phelan and
one sister Cecilia Deviney.
She was a faithful member of St.
Michael's Catholic Church in Blyth
and a member of the CWL for 60
years.
Friends were received at the
Tasker Chapel of the Beattie-
Falconer Funeral Home, Queen St.,
Blyth on Wednesday, Dec. 11 from
2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral
mass was held on Thursday, Dec.
12 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic
Church at 11:30 a.m. with Father
Mark Poulin officiating.
Pallbearers were George Blake,
Jim Phelan, Maurice Hallahan,
Peter Kelly, Wayne Park and
Dennis Hamm.
In remembrance, donations to a
charity of one's choice would be
appreciated by the family.
Spring interment will be at St.
Michael's Cemetery, Morris Twp.
JOE COOPER
Mr. Joe Cooper passed away at
Huronlea, Brussels on Tuesday,
Dec. 10, 1996. He was 102.
He is survived by one son Jim
and his wife Anne of RR3, Brus-
sels, a sister-in-law and brother-in-
law, Kathleen and Frank Lawless
of Arizona, and several nieces and
nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife
the former Ida Bremner, three sis-
ters, Elizabeth Gaynor, Annie
Cooper and Olive Armstrong, and
his parents Daniel Cooper and the
former Mary Ann Launderville.
Visitation was at Peebles Funeral
Home Atwood, on Thursday, Dec.
12, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. where
service and committal were held
Friday at 2 p.m. Father Joe Nevette
officiated.
Spring interment will be at St.
Ambrose Cemetery Brussels.
Donations to a charity of one's
choice would be accepted as
expressions of sympathy.
ALVIN L. PROCTER
A former resident of Belgrave,
Alvin Lawrence Procter of Bray
Lodge, Wingham, died at Wingham
and District Hospital on Monday,
Dec. 16, 1996. He was 86.
Mr. Procter was the beloved hus-
band of the former Ida Kelly. He
was the dear father of Douglas and
Debbie Procter of Seaforth, Faye
Procter of London, Wayne Procter
of Culross Twp., Donald and Kathy
Procter of Belgrave and Ken and
Lila Procter of Moths Twp. He was
the brother of Addie Howson and
Edna Stephens, both of Goderich,
Margaret Grain of Listowel and
Lloyd Procter of Sacramento, Calif.
He will be lovingly remembered by
his grandchildren, Kim and Kelly
Rau, Kristi, Tim, Michael, Andrew,
Ben and Jessica Procter. He is sur-
vived as well by a brother-in-law,
Charles Lloyd of Tucson, Ariz.
Mr. Procter was predeceased by
his parents the former Minnie
Lawrence and Miller Procter and
one sister Vera Lloyd.
Visitation was at the McBumey
Funeral Home, Wingham on Tues-
day, Dec. 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held there
on Wednesday (Today) at 1:30
p.m. Rev. Mary-Jane Hobden is the
officiating clergy.
Interment will be at Wingham
Cemetery.
Memorial donations to The
Alzheimer Society or the Wingham
and District Community Living
Association would be appreciated
as expressions of sympathy.
2 die in hospital
Victims of two separate motor
vehicle accidents passed away this
past week.
After a tragic accident, Nov. 24,
which had already claimed three
young lives, Mark Webster, 19, of
RR1, Varna, died Dec. 10, due to
multiple injuries sustained in the
crash.
Webster was the passenger in a
1995 Camero which was involved
in a collision on County Road 31,
north of Varna.
Less than two weeks later, Jean
D. Bate, 58, of Goderich, was
involved in a collision on Hwy 8,
west of Clinton. The passenger in
the 1992 Pontiac, Bates sustained
multiple injuries and passed away
in a London hospital, Dec. 11.
BREAK AND ENTER
A residence on Church Street in
Brussels. was broken into on Dec. 7
at midnight and several items were
stolen. A four door sedan, dark in
colour, late to mid 80s parked in
the driveway for approximately 25
minutes and removed a computer,
colour printer, Nikko stereo, amp
and double cassette, Mitsibushi
VCR, and 80 CDs. There were five
occupants with the vehicle, three
males and two females.
