Candlelight enrollment
The 1st Belgrave Girl Guides welcomed eight new
members on Thursday, Nov. 28 with a candlelight service.

Students celebrate season
Welcoming worshippers at Knox
United Church on Sunday, Dec. 15
were Loma Cook and Annie Cook.
The church was tastefully
decorated with Christmas tree
decorations and poinsettias.
Prior to song time Rev. Mary
Jane Hobden welcomed everyone
to the service of worship, it being
the third Sunday in Advent. Away
In A Manger and Joy to the World
were sung, followed by the silent
meditation and call to worship.
"The Prayer of Approach" was
read in unison followed by the
congregation singing 0 Come All
Ye Faithful. Yvonne Coultes and
Courtney McGee did the lighting of
the advent candles at Calvin-Brick
United Church. Annie, Ann
Harmony and Nathan Spivey lit the
advent candles along with the
readings.
The congregation joined in to
sing Hope Is a Star followed by the
prayer of confession in Unison and
the Words of Assurance.
Twelve members of the youth
choir sang Christmas Isn't
Christmas and Praise' Be to God
accompanied by Muriel Coultes
directing.
The Hebrew scriptures were
taken from Isaiah 61, 1-4, and 8-11
followed by the singing of I
Wonder as I Wander.
The children congregated in the
front pews for storytime. Rev.
Mary Jane asked the children if
they had been doing anything
special. The children said they had
been putting up their Christmas
trees and decorating them, buying
A house warming gathering of
the fourth line neighbours and
neighbours in Belgrave gathered at
the home of Garner and Alice
Nicholson in Belgrave on Saturday,
Dec. 7. Diane Jerva read a poem
that she had composed. Frank
Procter presented the Nicholsons
with a beautiful plant and a gift of
money on behalf of the group.
Garner and Alice replied with
appreciation to all.
A social time followed.

WMS sings
The WMS held its meeting on
Monday, Dec. 9 at the home of
Freda Scott. The purpose was read
and the program from the "Glad
Tidings" was followed.
Come All Ye Faithful was sung.
Hazel Dalrymple read scripture.
Margaret Siertsema read the
meditation followed by Alice
Nicholson reading a scripture.
Margaret read the minutes of the
last meeting and Ivy Cloakey gave
the financial report.
The roll call was answered by
each giving a Christmas poem or
story.
There were 26 shut-in visits
Hark the Herald Angels Sing was
sung.
The next meeting will be Jan. 6.
Angels From The Realm of Glory
was read.
Ivy closed with prayer. The
hostess served a lovely lunch.
Christmas presents and wrapping
them and some were hanging up
their stockings. She asked if they
had to move all their furniture in
the room just like she did just to
put up a Christmas tree.
She then asked what do people
have to do to make room for Jesus.
The children said that they could
pray more, put an angel on their
tree, make room in their heart and
maybe even get rid of anger and
selfishness. Other people should
always come first..
"Move all furniture in your heart
and be ready for Jesus when he
comes," she said.
The responsive psalm was 126
followed by the gospel reading
from John 1, verses 6-8 and 19-28.
0 For a Thousand Tongues was
the hymn which the congregation
all joined in singing accompanied
by Elizabeth Procter at the organ.
The sermon followed the same
theme as the children's story.
The offertory stewards were Ken
Procter and Don Procter. The
offertory song was All That I Am.
There will be a regular Sunshine
Singers practice next week, Dec. 22
and then no practice until Jan. 12.
Senior choir practice will be
Mondays at 8 p.m.
Tuesday, December 24 there will
be a candlelight service at 7:30
p.m.
The closing hymn On Jordan's
Bank was followed by The Lord's
Prayer.
The commissioning and three
fold Amens, "God Now in Peace"
brought the service to a close.
Ashley Irwin of Ashfield Twp.
spent last weekend at the home of
her grandmother, Betty Irwin.
Forty-six Edgar relatives
gathered at the WI Hall, Belgrave
on Saturday evening, Dec. 14 for
the Edgar Christmas. The Women's
Institute catered to the delicious
turkey dinner. After dinner,
Christmas carols were sung until
Santa arrived at 8 p.m. to help give
out the gifts which were under the
Christmas tree.
Progressive euchre was enjoyed
for the entertainment.
Relatives attended from Petrolia,
Aylmer, London, Blyth, Tavistock,
Wingham, Lucknow and Belgrave.
The Christmas Concert for junior
kindergarten, senior kindergarten,
Grades 1, 2/3, and 3/4 was held at
East Wawanosh Public School on
Thursday, Dec. 12. Starting the
evening off were two selections by
Grade 3/4 — "It's Christmas", and
"Jingle, Jingle, Jingle".
"A Christmas Alphabet" was
presented by the kindergarten A
class.
The Grades 2/3 and 3/4 followed
with "Have a Holly Jolly
Christmas" and "A Visit from St.
Nick".
The crowd enjoyed "The Night
Before Christmas" put on by
Grades 2/3 and 3/4.
Next in the program was "Dear
Santa Claus" by Grades 3/4
followed by "All I Want For
Christmas" by .Grades 2/3 and 3/4.
Everyone enjoyed "My Christmas
Cards" and "Auntie Flo", presented
by Grade 2/3 followed by Santa
Claus is Coming to Town" by
Grades 2/3 and 3/4.
Next to entertain were Kinder-
garten B doing "Now December's
44 play euchre
There were nine tables of euchre
in play on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at
the Women's Institute Hall.
Winners were: high lady, Lois
Chamney; second high lady, Jane
Grasby; lone hands, Iona McLean;
low lady, Norma Moore; high man,
Dennis Leddy; second high man,
Laura Johnston; lone hands, Allan
Edgar; low man, Gordon Bosman.
The next euchre will be
Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m.
There were 10 tables of shoot in
play at the Belgrave Community
Centre on Friday, Dec. 13.
Winners were: high lady, Jean
Deyell; second high lady, Aileen
Leddy; most shoots, Edythe
Coultes; low lady, Agnes Gaunt;
high man, Marj Coultes; second
high man, Lloyd Appleby; most
shoots, Laura Johnston; low man,
John King.
The next shoot party will be
Friday, Jan. 10.
Moms meet
Mabel's Moms met at their
regular time on Wednesday, Dec.
11. They welcomed back Lila
Procter with her little Jessica. Their
topic for discussion was premature
babies."

Grades 3/4 presented "Our
Christmas Tree" and Grades 2/3
and 3/4 "Rocking Around the
Christmas Tree". Everyone enjoyed
"A Christmas Greeting" by the
Grade 3/4 and "Tomorrow Is
Christmas" by Grade 2/3.
"Singing Christmas Carols" by
Grade 3/4 and "Snow In the City"
by Grades 2/3 were followed by
Grade 2/3 and 3/4 joining in for
"Winter Wonderland" and "Go Tell
It On The Mountain."
"Why Do Bells for Christmas
Sing" by Grade 2/3 was followed
by, "In My Father's House" and
"Silent Night".
The next three numbers
presented by Grade 1 were
"Christmas is Remembering", "A
Nativity Play" and "How Many
_Miles to Bethlehem".
The crowd was favoured with
students from Grades 3-6 playing
their recorders under the direction
of Blaine Fisher, which everyone
enioyed immensely. A sing-song of
old familiar. Christmas Carols
brought the evening to a close.
Principal Al Harrison thanked
everyone for coming and for all
those who had taken part or helped
in any way.
Anne Spivey was thanked for
providing the musical accompani-
ment and Jackie Garniss, Tracy
Robinson and Cathy Walker for
helping with costumes and props.
The Grade 8 class is busy selling
fruit baskets as a fundraiser for
their upcoming trip in May to
Quebec. The last date to order is
Dec. 19 with delivery on Dec. 20,
fresh for Christmas.

birthday Nov. 24. Levi Cook's big
day is Dec. 6. In math the Grade 2s
learned how to round to the nearest
10. Grade 3s are learning addition
with regrouping.
The class's favourite game in
gym is Kings Court.
