Blyth Fest. plays
Canadian jazz legend Oscar
Peterson presents a special
Christmas concert to benefit
Kitchener's St. Mary's Hospital.
The first-ever appearance by Mr.
Peterson on The Centre In The
Square's stage is set for Saturday,
Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.
Peterson is a star of international
importance. He is the first
Canadian-born jazz pianist to
achieve world-wide fame and has
won seven Grammy Awards, 10
honorary doctorates and dozens of
prizes and medals.
He has recorded with most of the
jazz greats over the years. His
One of the greatest classical
ballets, The Sleeping Beauty,
weaves its magical spell on stage at
Kitchener's The Centre In The
Square on Dec. 5 and 6. The
performances are scheduled for
7:30 p.m. so youngster's won't be
up too late.
Canada's acclaimed Royal
Winnipeg Ballet presents this
classic fairy tale complete with
sumptuous sets and costumes and
thrilling classical dance.

Christmas carol sing-song
followed, led by Hary McDowell
and Vera Badley. They then called
on guests, Debbie Siertsema and
Darlene Vanderveen. They sang
and played their guitars. This was
much enjoyed by everyone. Mary
Walden thanked the girls and
presented them with some flowers.
John Hesselwood followed with
some good jokes and read a
Christmas poem. Several prizes
were given out for lucky draws and
marked tea cups and plates. These
were all donated by the Ladies
Auxiliary and much appreciated by
the seniors.
The rest of the afternoon was
spent playing euchre and lost heir.

at this concert is Peter Appleyard.
Appleyard is a prolific and talented
musician and in great demand. His
skill on the vibraphone has been
acclaimed by Benny Goodman, "A
great vibraphonist," and Lionel
Hampton, "A great, great artist."
Also performing are the
forest where good triumphs over
evil through a single kiss. See the
wicked fairy, Prince Charming, and
Princess Aurora. Also joining the
cast are "Mother Goose" storybook
characters including Red Riding
Hood, the Wolf, Puss 'n Boots,
Tom Thumb and Cinderella.
The Sleeping Beauty is the
crowning achievement of one of

The kids at BPS are learning to •
use the Internet and e-mail. We
asked some Grade 2s what they
thought about it. Kyle Lorimer
thought it was easier than writing
on paper. Jill thought it was fun.
Sarah Garland thought it was better
than looking through books. Grade
7/8 students, Mr. Kemp and others
have been sending replies to them.
On Thursday, Nov. 21, Rob
Neves, a story teller from Listowel,
came to share his creativity with us.
He told many humorous stories.
The whole school thought he was
great.
On Nov. 18, SAFE week began.
Students learned about substance
Magnetics Jazz Choir, one of North
America's top vocal jazz groups.
They have won numerous awards
and have made five recordings as
well as appearing on many
television and radio programmes.
On behalf of this fundraising
concert for St. Mary's Hospital,
Peterson .will also attend a special
post-concert reception. Tickets for
the reception, preferred seating and
a tax receipt are available for $100.

The Ark had various activities,

parents could come and learn how
to make non-alcoholic beverages
and the kids could bring their own
banana and make a banana split.
There also was a drug free dance.
At the school there is a gift box
for the needy, organized by Matt
Clarkson and Phil Leger. Students
are free to bring in canned goods,
clothes or toys. Money donations
are also accepted. The box will be
out in front of the office until Dec.
13.
Students are asked to please
bring indoor shoes in case of fire
drills, and for safety reasons.
The quality and professionalism
of Blyth Festival Theatre has once
again been recognized with its
seven nominations for the upcom-
ing Stage Door Awards.
In acknowledging excellence in
live professional theatre in South-
western Ontario, Stage Door
Awards are given to recipients in
drama, musical, comedy and tech-
nical divisions.
Blyth Festival Theatre's produc-
tion of Fireworks received numer-
ous nominations including Best
New Play for playwright Gordon
Portman, Leslie Wilkinson for
Lighting Design, Rustey Davenport
as Best Supporting Actor and Janet
Amos as Best Actress.
Wanda Graham received a nomi-
nation for her Best Actress portray-
al in Ma Belle Mabel while Liza
Balkan got the nod for Best Sup-
porting Actress in the same dramat-
ic production.
In the comedy category, Jocelyne
Zucco will be up for the Best Sup-

Blyth council is also waiting for
a report which will put a price on
the cost of policing for municipali-
ties. Provincial recommendations
state that municipalities will
assume the cost of policing,
whether through the OPP or an
independent force such as Wing-
ham now has.
