Defying the winter weather there
was a good turnout of the Auburn
Horticultural society for the
meeting on Nov. 11 at 8 p.m.
O Canada was sung to begin the
meeting with Jane Stryker, as
pianist. Dorothy Schneider,
president welcomed everyone.
Heather Dumin gave the minutes of
the last meeting. The Pumpkinfest
had been successful as well as
enjoyable. Ann Vincent gave the
treasurer's report with $1,950.93 on
hand.
On Nov. 9 Dorothy Schneider
had a directors' meeting at her
home. There is work to be done at
Manchester Gardens. For the
March meeting ideas and designs
for it will be needed. If anyone
would care to give a unique plant
or flower it would be planted there.
John Stryker is making another
bench.
Discussion about the night lights
and Christmas lights followed. Don
Haines has done the winter
covering of the fountain for years
and is to be thanked for his faithful
work. Regina Campbell offered to
take care of it this year.
Lots of hard work and working
together played a part in sustaining
a 50-year marriage, said Mildred
and Tom Lawlor of Auburn, who
marked their golden anniversary,
Nov. 18.
"We don't know how we did it
(all the work)," they said, "but we
appreciated everything we got."
The pair started with nothing,
running their own farm in Colborne
Twp. while Mr. Lawlor helped run
the home farm, looked after a rent-
ed property and worked as a car-
penter as well. "We had to pay off
the farm," said Mrs. Lawlor.
The Lawlors also said things
have changed since the early days
of their marriage. "We had a lot of
visitors. It was fun when neigh-
bours would drop by for cards.
Neighbours would help each other
when it was needed. Today, you
On Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. the annual
meeting will be held. A 1st vice
president should be appointed at
this time. Remember that more
members can help increase grants,
so membership needs to grow.
Maxine Seers introduced the
guest speakers for the evening,
Luann Taylor and Linda Wilson
from Luann's Country Flowers,
Blyth. On display were a number of
floral designs already made. As
Luann spoke about these Linda
busily made a beautiful
centrepiece. They showed the
various sprays, evergreen boughs,
cones, milkweed pods, etc. that are
used. Cherubs and angels are also
used.
A small box resembling a trunk
filled with old and new articles was
shown. Linda told how to glaze
grapes so that they look snow
covered and how to save ribbons in
decorating. Luann closed with
another centrepiece. Maxine
thanked them for their very
decorative and informative speech.
They answered numerous questions
as everyone enjoyed assorted
cheese and breads to close the
meeting.
don't even know your neighbours."
Mildred (Anderson) and Tom
Lawlor were wed at Benmiller
United Church manse, with Mary
Park and Gordon Schultz as their
attendants.
As well as working very hard
running the farm for 32 years, the
pair raised one son, Jim. They also
have five grandchildren, which
Mrs. Lawlor said, are the "joy of
her life."
After retiring from farming, the
couple returned to the Lawlor
homestead, just west of Auburn.
Mrs. Lawlor has been active in
the Auburn UCW, WI, Horticultur-
al Society and Travel Club as well
as being an avid collector of such
items as decorative thimbles, bells,
horseg and more than 600 salt and
pepper shaker sets.
"It is something I always wanted
to try," said new entrepreneur Ron
Ritchie, of his purchase of a part-
nership in Stickers Restaurant,
Auburn.
"I was always interested in the
business. I enjoy meeting the peo-

Though presently taking care of
the fuel portion of the business,
Ritchie said once partner Teresa
Godfrey teaches him a little more
about cooking, he will be helping
in that area as well.
"I enjoy cooking and may even
try making the muffins, but not the
pies," he laughed.

25, at Auburn, is open seven days a
week, from 6:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.
in the winter.
