Customer service, BBA's speaker topic
Customers respond loyally to a
business that treats them well and
fairly, consultant Tina Heathers
told members of the Blyth Business
Association at their fall banquet
Oct. 28 at the Blyth Legion hall.
Heathers, who runs Future By
Design with her husband from their
home at Kippen, told the business
leaders and their employees that it
is very important that a business
have a customer service mission
statement. "It is important that
every single person in the business
knows the policy — how far you
will go for customer service. It only
takes one part-time worker answer-
ing the phone to upset your cus-

version, the Huron Tourism Asso-
ciation, along with the county's

Calendar is a special calendar

March, they recall some of the best
parts of Canada. Rubalcava was
excited by the Stratford Festival
and the malls. ("Everything is
cheaper.") Gillard attended a Rap-
tors basketball game. Gueguen was
happy she got to see a part of Cana-
da that was what she expected, big
forests and bears. Her host family
travelled through British Columbia
for the first three weeks of her stay.
Domecq liked everything.
They will also be taking a bit of
tomers — and you'll likely never
hear from them." For every person
who actually complains about poor
service, she said, there are 10 who
walk away and never return.
She advised setting customer ser-
vice standards. How many times
can a phone ring before it is
answered? Many companies say it
should be answered by the third
ring. Some companies have a poll!,
cy that every shopper will be greet-
ed within 30 seconds of entering
the store. "Look at the business as
if it was your home," she advised.
"If you can't clearly identify your
customer service philosophy then
your staff can't either," she said.
No matter how rude a customer
on the number of copies they sell.
They are only 4,000 copies of the
calendar and chances of winning
are very high for each purchaser.
Winners names remain in the
running for each subsequent draw.
The Lottery Calendar is available
for sale for $15 each at a variety of
locations throughout the county
and more distribution centres will
be offering the calendar before
Christmas.

All Ontario students involved in
the program must be between the
age of 14 and 17 for the duration of
the exchange and are academically
above average because of the lost
school time. The cost for participa-
tion in 1996 was $1,700 per stu-
dent. It is expected to rise next
year.
Three other Huron County youth
are taking part in the exchange: Jes-
sica-Ann Dozois of Goderich Dis-
trict Collegiate Institute, will travel
to Italy with Francesca Ciammitti;

is to you, if you respond rudely
they will blame you and tell their

confidence in your business, she
said.
Part of customer service is proper
treatment of staff, said Heathers,
who ran her own chain of stores
before selling them out and becom-
ing a consultant teaching courses in
entrepreneurship, salesmanship and
time and stress-management. "If
employees don't think they're being
treated right then they won't be nice
to the customer. The employees are
an 'internal customer'. You can't
just pay people and expect them to
do a good job. If your staff isn't
happy there's a 90 her rent chance
has suggested that "this enjoyable
fundraising calendar has become an
ideal gift item: One size fits all, no
allergies to the prizes and there are
no complaints about the wrong
colours! The proceeds fund a
substantial promotional and
marketing program for the county
which builds year round economic
benefits such as stronger seasonal
employment and increased visitor,
numbers to all regions in Huron.
It's a good example of a winning
combination for all tourism
partners."
