The best new release this week is also one of the best reasons to own a
laserdisc player. As I mentioned a while back, Terry Gilliam is one of my
favourite contemporary directors. His latest film 12 Monkeys is among my
10 best so far this year, but also in the running is Gilliam's 1986 epic
Brazil **** (Criterion), an amazing futuristic fantasy about a fascist
society. This is the original 142-minute European version that Gilliam
fought so hard to have released here in North America over the objections
of Universal Studios. Although Brazil was considered uncommercial, after
a very public battle between the director and the studio it was edited to
131 minutes and released to mixed reviews.
This laserdisc of Brazil has been three years in the planning and the
beautiful new digital transfer is presented in the original widescreen aspect
ratio with a delightful running audio commentary by Terry Gilliam on the
analog audio track. In addition there is over seven hours of supplementary
material including a rare 30 minute on set documentary made for the
European release, a video history recounting the battle over Brazil's
American release, a production scrapbook featuring interviews with the
screenwriters, production designers and the original storyboards for
sequences planned but not filmed.
This definitive version of Brazil from Criterion also gives us a rare
chance to compare Terry Gilliam's version next to what Universal had in
mind for the film. The love conquers all version runs 94 minutes and
includes all the cuts Gilliam refused to make from the alternate opening to
the infamous happy ending. All in all this box set is a genuine film buff's
delight.
Among the other new releases you will find Spy Hard (Hollywood) a
Naked Gun type spoof of James Bond starring Leslie Neilson. (Rated PG)
Sharon Stone headlines the cast of Last Dance (Touchstone) as a woman
on death row awaiting execution for the murder of her boyfriend and
another schoolmate. (Rated 14A)
Shirley MacLaine and Ricki Lake star in Mrs. Winterbourne
(Columbia/Tristar) a comedy about a pregnant young woman who is
mistaken for the widow 'of a young man who is heir to a fortune. (Rated
PG-13)
Director Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty (Fox) stars Liv Tyler as
a young woman who travels to Tuscany, Italy to spend the summer with
her family. Also in the cast is Jeremy Irons. (Rated R)
Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (Alliance) undergoes another filming, this
time directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring William Hurt, Charlotte
Gainsbourg and Anna Paquin. (Rated PG)
Families may enjoy The Adventures of Pinnochio (Alliance - $22.95 or
less) a live-action version of Collodi's story of a wooden puppet who longs
to be a real boy. Good computer special effects. (Rated G)
In Fist of the North Star (C/FP) a superhuman warrior wanders the
wastelands waging war against evil. Doesn't sound too original, but if you
like action films this might be worth a look. (Rated R)

Over 300 attend Halloween dance at Madill
DANCE
By Kendra Hopper
Some of the more adventurous
students of F. E. Madill attended a
Halloween dance at the school on
Thursday, Oct. 24. It was estimated
that between 300 to 350 came to
the Much Music dance with one-
third dressing up for the occasion.
Almost all of the students who
came, used their newly purchased
student cards for a $5 discount to
get into the dance; otherwise they
would have paid $10!
The Students' Council awarded
prizes for the best eight costumes.
Michelle Kennedy (dressed as a
genie) won the Best Costume
award, which was a "Dance Mix
'96" CD.
The next dance will be held on
Thursday, Nov. 21 from 8 - 11 p.m.
This will be a casino dance,
featuring a DJ and casino games to
play (including prizes to be given
out).
RUNNING TO THE TOP!
By Alysha Metcalfe
Athletes of F. E. Madill Second-
ary School participated in the
Western Ontario Secondary School
Athletics (WOSSA) to gain and
maintain a place in the Ontario
Federation of Secondary School
Athletics Association (OFSSAA)
competition that took place Nov. 1
and 2.
When asked how the team
thought they would do overall at
OFSSA, one athlete remarked, "We
have beaten one of the hardest
teams. I am confident that our team
should place among the other teams
for a medal standing."
Madill athletes who have
advanced as far as OFSSAA have
practised their short and long
distant running since the middle of
September. These dedicated
students run everyday after school,
rain or shine. They also run once
during the weekend to help ensure
their muscles stay limber for their
races.
Running and competing in
general means a lot to these
athletes. Since the athletes have
started running more earnestly,
some members of the cross country
team feel they have become more
dedicated in all they do and take
the little tasks and duties in life
more seriously than they once used
to. One athlete commented that it
gives them a strong drive to
accomplish and succeed at all they
do. •
Dennis Lubbers, an athlete who,
placed 11th overall at WOSSA,
said that one of his dreams was to
make it to the Olympics. Even
though Dennis doubted he would
ever fulfill that dream, he backed
up that thought by saying there
wasn't any harm in setting high
goals and dreams for himself. You
can only become a better person
because of it!
I wish the team the best of luck
as they pursue their cross country
training! Good luck in the future.
PARENT
By Arlene McKeon
This year's Parent/Teacher night
was held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at
F.E. Madill Secondary School.
The night went very well with
244 parents attending. The Family
Studies food classes made cookies
and squares -and Mrs. Aitchison
made coffee.
The school was open from 6:30 -
8:30 p.m. The parents arrived,
registered and then chose
refreshments.
The purpose of this night was,
"An opportunity for parents to
discuss their child's progress," said
Mrs. Elston. Some parents just like
to meet the teachers and let them
IthoVvt they are interested. The
.teachers°iPere very busy, a good
sign. :I think it was a very positive
evening," said Mrs. Elston.
Let's hope the next parent/teacher
night goeS well, also. It will be held
Thursday, April 10, 1997 for
second semester.
The next event of interest to
parents of senior students is
"Taking the Mystery Out of Post-
Secondary Education", to be held
on Monday, Nov. 18 at 7:15 in the
Madill Library. A guest speaker
will address financial concerns,
specifically OSAP.

formed this group. The topics that
will be discussed are "building
relationships on mutual respect,
how to be effective communicators
in the home and family" and "how
to enable our teens to be the
capable people that they are."
From these topics parents will
learn how to lower their stress level
and new parenting skills which will
benefit the whole family.
For more information, call Pat at
