Ghosts, goblins, witches, black
cats, jack-o-lanterns and bats - all
these things are associated with
Halloween.
Oct. 31, people get dressed up as
anything they can think of. They
knock on doors and say "trick or
treat". The person on the other side
of the door drops some kind of treat
into their bag and off they go to the
next person's door.

That Thing You Do is a good
movie with an even better
soundtrack.
Tom Hanks wrote, directed and
starred in That Thing You Do, a
movie about a music group in Erie,
PA in the early mid-60s. They enter
a talent show, but just before the
show, their drummer breaks his
arm. They find a new drummer,
who speeds up their ballad. It
becomes an award-winning song
when they claim first prize.
A restaurant owner then offers
them a gig which eventually leads
to a record contract, a hit album
and a lot of fame.
As an addition, there is a love
story. Liv Tyler's character is the
lead singer's girlfriend. She travels
with the group while they're on
tour. Of course, he turns out to be a
total jerk. I'd love to tell you what
happens between them, but that
would be giving away the ending.
In addition to his acting, Tom
Hanks shows some talent for
writing scripts, although his writing
is a little raw. Despite the
predictability of the ending and the
fact that some of the script was
hard to believe, it was a comedy
worthy of Tom Hank's well-known
name.
Watching That Thing You Do, I
realized how much the 60s are

The musical sound of that era is
also making its reappearance,
because turning on the radio, the
morning after seeing the movie, I
heard the song, That Thing You Do.
I can definitely see why this kind of
music has lasted. It is upbeat and
fun. It's not often that one song
upstages so entertaining a movie,
but in this case it did. I even found
myself singing it as I left the
theatre. The movie is perfect for
anyone who likes a bit of romance.
