Legion begins
poppy campaign
THE EDITOR,
What does the word
"Remembrance" mean?
For as long as there have been
War Casualties, there have been
ways of remembering them.
Present-day Remembrance Day
services represent one variation of
this very old custom.
Nov. 11 took on special
significance when the hostilities of
the First World War ceased at 11
a.m. Nov. 11, 1918. Consequently,
1919 marked the first observance
of what has become an
international day of Remembrance.
The Royal Canadian Legion
conducts annual services of
remembrance in the nation's capital
and in communities throughout
Canada every Nov. 11 in memory
and to honour those who sacrificed
their lives in Canada's wars. Every
year Remembrance Day essays,
poster and poem contests are held
and contestants are challenged to
express their initiative in writing
and drawing on this theme.
The Annual Poppy Campaign
allows the opportunity, for every
Canadian to show that they care
and remember by wearing a poppy.
This is the only national appeal by
the Royal Canadian Legion to the
general public for funds. All
proceeds are placed in trust
accounts and after expenses,
including the cost of the poppies
and wreaths are paid, the funds are
used to assist Canadian ex-service
personnel and their dependents in
necessitous countries and of Allied
countries resident in Canada. (This
was shown in the poppy account
statement show in last week's
edition of The Citizen, thanks to
Comrades Gord and Pat Jenkins).
Some of the funds may be used
for the following purposes:
1. Community medical appliances
and medical research
2. Daycare centres, meal on
wheels, transportation related
services for veterans, their
dependents and the aged
3. Donations for relief of disasters
declared by the federal and
provincial governments.
Although national in scope, each
Branch of the Legion is responsible
for conducting its own campaign,
collecting and disbursing the funds
collected in its own area.
What is the objective? The
answer to this question is broken
down as follows:
1. To recognize the sacrifice made
by thousands of Canadians in the
First and Second World Wars and
in the Korean War.
2. To develop and understanding
of the significance of
Remembrance Day.
3. To develop an awareness of the
ceremonies and the rites of the
past as they are reflected in the
present.
4. To appreciate the qualities of
endurance and courage and
devotion to the principles of
freedom within our multicultural
community.
5. To celebrate peace.
Please show your support — buy a
poppy and wear it proudly.
