Happenings at Huronlea By Olive Sproul We have a number of residents who are keen on euchre. One of them often goes on the warpath to round up three more players to give the first one the game he desires. We've been having a few of these contests lately as we have a new 90-year-old resident who has been playing the game since she was four years of age. This is Connie McMinn. She is very proficient at playing euchre. Another new short-term resident is Mable Riley. We often have short stay residents where the regular caregivers are sick, or must leave home for a holiday. There is one room, 101, which is exclusively for this purpose. Harvey Craig, from the Walton area is a new resident. He moved in two months or so ago. A fourth fairly recent addition Henry Hodgekinson moved in during the past summer. Steve Cook gathered the members of the Walking Club and took them for a brisk wander around the outside of the building, distance of at least three-quarters of a mile. On the return, everyone joined in a brisk session of balloon- batting until lunch-time with the idea of working up an appetite for the special Oktoberfest luncheon. We feasted on the. rich spicy garlic flavoured sausages, made even more mouth-watering than usual because they were served on long and fresh sesame seed buns. This mouth-watering treat was accompanied by potato salad, and coleslaw. We finished with ice cream sundaes for dessert. We ate in the foyer and were joined by most of the apartment' dwellers, who stayed on to be entertained by Kim Souch, a guitar-playing singer. Thanksgiving was a quiet weekend. Although there were lots of visitors there was no music on Saturday afternoon, nor church on Sunday. We had the traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday evening right down to the cranberries and pumpkin pie. I went out for Thanksgiving. It was also my birthday! I was pleased to be going for the leaves were becoming very colourful by that Curling news Brussels Curling Club met at the home of President Mike Alexander. It was good weather all weekend and we saw a number of farmers combining soya beans. Some were also combining corn. We were always overtaking trac- tors, pickups pulling overflowing grain wagons full of combined corn. Most of them were in the vicinity of grain drying silos, of which there seem to be more every year. It was recently Activation Professional Awareness Week. We notice Steve and Cindy buzzing about busy as bees finding more entertainment for the residents. Besides that, they are also good at initiating all kinds of games and pleasurable activities such as gab time where we do all kinds of quizzes and answer questions posed by a story or a poem. They spend a good deal of time with residents one-on-one getting to know them as individuals.
