Farewell concert
Showband swings through Blyth
By Janice Becker
It is the last round for the Carlton
Showband, one final trip across the
country to say goodbye to old
friends and new acquaintances,
when they pass through Blyth for a
one-night show, Nov. 1. It is also
the first step into a new phase of
life for the members, some of
whom have been a part of the
group for 33 years.
"It is an emotional roller coaster,"
says Gregory Donaghey and Fred
White, two long-time members.
"It is hard to thank the people,
They are not just fans, they are
friends. If we play a particular town
and they are not there, we worry
about them."
What makes the Carlton Show-
band's tour even more difficult is
that every night is a last night. "We
feel as though we are disrupting
their lives because we are telling
our friends we will never see them
again," the pair says.
For White, the change in lifestyle
may seem to be the most difficult
as the band has been part of his life
since its inception. "I wasn't terri-
bly enthused about the idea of clos-
ing it down after 33 years," says
White," but I realized I wouldn't
want it to carry on without me. I
wouldn't have wanted to see a new
Robert Wagner and Jill St. John
will star in Love Letters, at
Kitchener's The Centre In The
Square for one performance only
on Monday, Oct. 28.
Love Letters, written by A. R.
Gurney, follows a poignant 50-year
relationship between Andy Ladd
and Melissa Gardner. The play, in
the form of personal correspon-
dence to each other, follows the
characters through all of life's
momentous occasions, from
grammar school dance classes, to
high school proms, from antics in
the college dorm to their eventual
marriages to other people,
Robert Wagner, one of the most
popular and successful stars in the
entertainment industry, brings his
member take the band in a different
direction. I can leave knowing the
band was exactly what I wanted it
to be."
The decision to disband came at
a time when some members were
facing changes in their personal
lives. Marriages, spousal careers
and commuting arrangements made
the decision come easy.
The idea, which first arose this
summer, was quickly agreed upon
by the members, and the final tour
went into planning.
An amazing group of people are
looking after the tour and every-
thing fell into place quickly, they
say.
As for the future, band members
already have other plans in the
works. Donaghey will be involved
in Newfoundland's 500th anniver-
sary celebrations next year, while
White will be working behind the
scenes in the music business. The
others are also looking ahead, says
Donaghey.
The Carlton Showband will make
their final stop in Blyth, Nov. 1.
Current members, White, Don-
aghey, Roddy Lee, Aaron Lewis,
Robert Benoit and Larris Benoit,
will bring a mixture of country,
Irish, and gospel tunes, rounded out
with a touch of comedy, to the
stage.
considerable talent to the role of
Andy. Andy Wagner will be well
remembered by local audiences for
his three, hit television series Hart
to Hart, It Takes A Thief and
Switch.
Jill St. John, (real life wife of
Robert Wagner), has appeared in
over 30 movies and countless
television shows. She may be best
remembered as Tiffany Case, to
Sean Connery's James Bond in
Diamonds are Forever.
Tickets are on sale at The Centre
in The Square box office at 519-
578-1570 or toll free 1-800-265-
8977. Prices range from $30 to $45.
Tenor Donaghey is a lead singer
who can rouse an audience with his
rendition of Danny Boy or get them
laughing with Jake the Peg.
White adds his energy and con-
nection between the old and the
new, to the band's performance.
One of Canada's most experi-
enced drummers, Lee, is the heart-
beat behind the guitar and fiddle
work of Robert Benoit and bass
player Larris Benoit.
A second-generation Showband
member, Lewis is magic on the
keyboards and lends his excellent
voice to the Carlton Showband
sound.
For those who miss the Carlton
Showband's farewell tour, the
entire event is being recorded for
posterity, by a CBC freelance crew.
It will be available on video.
Tickets, at a cost of $20 advance
or $22 at the door, are available at

Child Find Huron County is in
danger of folding if volunteers can't
be found.
Organizers say lack of people to
help out at events is a major
concern.
Child Find regularly holds "Kid
Checks" in Huron for parents to
fingerprint and ID their children. In
case they ever go missing, the
information can help police in
relocating them.
A meeting to hopefully attract
more volunteers will be held at the
Child Find office at 100 Main St.,
Seaforth (beside The Huron
Expositor) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday,
Oct. 29. Anyone interested is
welcome to attend.
