As the weather becomes colder the activity at your local video store is
heating up with a season of blockbuster movies. Twister has turned out to
be almost as big an item on the home screen as it was in theatres, and over
the next few weeks numerous other hits like Toy Story, Mission
Impossible, The Nutty Professor and Independence Day will be available
for rent or sale.
While most of this week's new releases may not fall into the blockbuster
category The Arrival ***1/2 (New Line) is an unjustly overlooked sci-fi
thriller about a radio astronomer who discovers an alien conspiracy to take
over the earth. Charlie Sheen gives a very good performance as the
astronomer. The script is by David Twohy (The Fugitive, Waterworld),
who also directed this exciting and fast paced ride. Highly enjoyable.
(Rated PG)
The Starmaker ***112 (Alliance) is the latest film from Giuseppe
Tomatore whose Cinema Paradise won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film
several years ago. This new film also deals with the golden age of cinema
and focuses on a travelling con man who uses the lure of a screen test to
part the locals from their lire while promising to show them to studio
heads back in Rome. Of course this is all a sham, that is until his life is
changed by a beautiful young woman. This is a bittersweet and touching
film about the lure and magic of the movies.
Unfortunately, The Starmaker, which was made in widescreen
Panavision, is marred by a lousy pan and scan video transfer. Oscar
nominee for Best Foreign Film in Italian with English subtitles.
Among the other new releases is Beautiful Girls (Alliance), a romantic
comedy about a high school reunion. This one features a good cast that
includes Matt Dillon, Annabeth Gish, Timothy Hutton, Rosie O'Donnell,
Mira Sorvino and Uma Thurman. (Rated 14A)
In comedy, Multiplicity (Columbia/Tristar) Michael Keaton plays a busy
man whose time management problems are solved when he has himself
cloned, or are they? Also in the cast are Andie MacDowell, Richard Masur
and Eugene Levy. (Rated PG)
Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed A Midwinter's Tale
(Columbia/Tristar) a new comedy about a group of eccentric actors as they
try to pull together a production of I lamlet . (Rated 14A)
Fans that ever popular Canadian Institute Anne Shirley will be happy
with the release of Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (Sullivan - $22.95
or less) which is finally available again after a long moratorium. (Unrated)
Also available after many years of unavailability is the charming
Muppet special Emmit Otter's Jug Band Christmas **** (Disney - $12.95
or less). Not only do you get this wonderful program, but a Christmas tree
ornament also comes packaged with it. Highly recommended.

MRS. WIESE GRADE 1 CLASS
The Grade 1 class has been
decorating for fall. They used
broomstalks, Indian corn, gourds
and pumpkins. They also made
scarecrows. They helped make the
school pretty.
MRS. BOSMAN'S
GRADE 2s •
Grade 2 is really going to enjoy
Fall because their new unit is
Harvest and Agriculture. As well as
learning about modern farming
practices, they're tasting the harvest
of delicious vegetables available
this time of year. They've made
turkeys for art and had fun making
their own individual pumpkin pies
for Thanksgiving, as well as an
"I'm Thankful" book.
Congratulations to Bridge, Marie
and Derek for completing the first
level of individual reading, and to
Michael Roy, who had already
completed level two as well. Way
to go!
MR. LIVERMORE'S
GRADE 4 CLASS
Mr. Livermore's class is studying
insects. Each student has found an
insect and is doing research on it.
In Language Arts the students
have enjoyed doing Thanksgiving
activities. Their work in story
writing, spelling and art show how
much people appreciate the season
of Thanksgiving.
Mr. Livermore has introduced a
theme unit on Halloween for this
month. The students will have fun
doing many interesting activities
from writing spooky stories, doing
phantom phonics to doing puzzles,
riddles and poems associated with
Halloween.
MRS. KEMP'S
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergartens have been learning
songs and poems about autumn
leaves and making beautiful leaf
printings.
They also talked about Thanks-
giving. To celebrate that special
day everyone is bringing a fruit to
make a fruit salad.
JUNIOR SOCCER
TOURNAMENT
The Junior Girls and Boys soccer

Centennial School on Wednesday,

Mr. Livermore coached the Hullett
teams.
The Junior Intramural schedule is
now over and the students are
gearing up their skills for the
playoffs._
SENIOR SOCCER
TOURNAMENT
On Wednesday, Oct. 2 the senior
boys and girls soccer team attended
the annual soccer tournament at
Huron Centennial School. Both
teams showed great sportsmanship
and teamwork. Our teams played
extremely well. Hullett's boys and
girls teams placed first. The girls
had 14 points and the boys had 13
points.
Congratulations to both teams
and many thanks to their great
coaches, Miss Jewitt and Mr.
Livermore.
