Brussels PS news Student's poem in Iliad Press contest By Eileen Exel and Stephen Todd Kate Kuepfer's poem The Boy has qualified for the final judging in the Iliad Press contest. Councillor Duskocy had declared a pecuniary interest and stepped away from the council table. A bylaw for repairs to Inglis Drain, Lot 30, Conc. 5 was given first and second reading. It must be submitted to Grey Twp. and Brus- sels council for comment. Portions of Hopper Drain and Blyth Creek Drain will be aban- doned after the passage of the bylaws. No appeals were received for either drain. Members of Morris council will attend meetings across the region to review the county plan. There were no objections to the draft proposal for the Blyth Com- munity Centre Board. West Wawanosh Twp. will no longer be involved in the agreement. Council endorsed the resolution by Clinton, recommending the county refuse to accept responsibil- ity for Hwys. 83, 84 and 87. Authorization was given for Clerk-Treasurer Nancy Michie to attend clerks' meetings, Oct. 17 and 25. Council approved, in principle, the water agreement with Brussels for residents on the edge of the vil- lage. A quote from Coldstream Con- crete Ltd, for tile for Ruff Drainage Works, will be accepted at $8,715.31. An agreement with the Ministry of Transportation for their purchase of CNR lands at Lot 14, Conc. 1, was approved. A bylaw was passed, authorizing the transfer of former CNR land at Lot 28-30, Conc. 1, to Bonnie Johnston. Councillor Keith John- ston had left the chamber due to a pecuniary interest. Following a request from Roger Somers, council agreed to change the name of Sideroad 25-26, Conc. 5-7, to McLean Line, after former residents. Urban numbering for 911 was approved. The tender from George Radford Construction, Blyth, was accepted for the snowplowing of Conc. 8 and 9, including adjoining side- roads, or as instructed by the town- ship. The contract, which runs from Nov. 15 through March 31, will cost $45 per hour plus $30 per day standby. Council hired Roger Somers of RR2, Blyth, as a part-time snow- plow operator for the coming win- ter season. A new cable line is being installed between Bluevale and Belgrave for improved cable televi- sion service. Ontario Hydro will remove two trees from Jane Street, Be!grave, because of their dangerous condi- tion. A recreation grant, totalling $13,030, was approved for 1996.. The Grade 5 and 7s will be having the CAT (Canadian Achieve- ment Tests). This compares our students' academic achievements with others across Canada and Huron County. The results help the teachers to focus on areas of weak- ness to improve our school curriculum. We would like to thank Mr. Kyle and Mr. Jones for painting the gym. It looks terrific, complete with the Blazer crest. This past week we have been busy working on the Partners in Excellence reading program. The students have a challenge to read 10 books before Nov. 8. The people who have completed the challenge have received a Gold medal. Also Mrs. Uhler planned the Read-in Week. Mr. Prior is offering computer courses for the community. There are three two night courses of introduction to the internet and introduction to computers, a five night course. There will be more courses in January, so if you missed it this time you still have a chance to learn about the intemet. Philip Wedow and Kelly White By Margaret Stapleton A Wingham high school teacher is the newest member of the board of governors at Wingham and District Hospital. Murray Hunter replaces Ivan Metcalfe, who tendered his resignation to the October meeting of the board. Metcalfe was acclaimed to the board at the June annual meeting as a representative of the Town of wingham. Vice-Chairman George Underwood reported to the October meeting that under its bylaws, the board may appoint to fill a found a large cocoon when helping Mr. Kemp trim trees on Tuesday. Underwood replied that he believed Wingham should continue to have five representatives, at least until the board decides whether or not it will downsize membership.
