Crusaders home opener was less than satisfactory as
they came away on the losing end.

Bulldog battles Bull
A member of the Kincardine Bulldogs demonstrates some
goon hockey as he and a Brussels Bull go fist to head
during the game on Sunday afternoon. It was another
notch in the loss column for the home team, who have yet
to capture their first win.

Bulldogs hand Bulls 5th loss
Friday night Bill Peters third goal
of the game, an empty-netter with
six seconds remaining, gave the
Goderich Pirates a 7-5 exhibition
win over the Crusaders.
Brian Campbell with two, Corey
McKee, Jeff Earl and Greg Fritz
scored for Brussels, who led 3-2
after 20 minutes but trailed 6-3
seconds into third period action.
Tim Harrison with two, Kris
Bedard, and Don Rivers completed
the Goderich scoring.
Saturday night Corey McKee set
up Ron Strome four times and Tom
McDonald once, but it wasn't
enough as the Shelburne Muskies
skated to a 7-5 win in the Crusaders
Brussels Tykes home opener was
an exciting well played game.
The Goderich Red team opened
the scoring first, but Brussels
quickly responded to tie it up.
Brussels took the lead in the
second but, Goderich tied it again.
The goals went back and forth until
Goderich was leading with only six
minutes left to play when Chris
Corbett scored to tie the game at
four goals, and get a hat trick at the
same time. The last five minutes of
the game had plenty of end-to-end
action. Goderich hit the post and
then Brussels hit the cross bar,
which made for a great finish to
their home opener.
home opener.
Shelburne led 3-0 after one
period and held a four-goal lead
late in the second before Brussels
rallied, scoring three times in 48
seconds, then tying with six
seconds remaining.
However, Shelburne replied with
three midway through the third for
the win. Mark Armitage with four,
Norm Tobin, Keith Davis and Dave
Johnston scored for the Muskies.
Pat Cronin took the loss Saturday
while Tony Smith was in net Friday.
The Crusaders travel to Clinton
Friday, then return home for a
rematch of last year's final against
the Ripley Wolves Saturday.
Also scoring for Brussels was
Chase Chapman. Assists went to
Wade Stephenson, Tyler Deitner,
William King, and Chris Corbett.
Brussels' only penalty was Adam
Corbett for slashing.
Christopher Jutzi played a hard-
fought game along the boards. All
of the first year Tykes played very
well. Once the puck was dropped
they all knew exactly what to do.
Shane Gibson made some
excellent saves in net for Brussels.
The next game is on Saturday,
Oct. 26 in Stephen Township.
This past weekend the Brussels
Bulls played only one game, at
home to the 7 and 1 Kincardine
Bulldogs.
The Bulls got on the board first at
7:30 of the first period when Dan
Williams scored assisted by Tim
Zaba. The score remained 1-0 until
Kincardine with 1:56 left in the
first, tied the game. That's how it
stayed into the first intermission.
At 8:36 of the second Kincardine
made the score 2-1 and took that
lead into the second intermission.
The Bulls had a lot of chances in
this one, but just couldn't bury the
puck behind the Kincardine
netminder.
At 12:33, with only four seconds
remaining on Grant Jarvis's
penalty, Kincardine made the score
3-1 and then only 39 seconds after
that, made the score 4-1 and that
would be all they needed as the
Bulls suffered their fifth loss.
Mike deJong played goal for the
Bulls and kicked out 33 shots while
Novice Reps lose
The Brussels Novice Rep squad
got off to a rocky start in the hock-
ey season when they met Wing-
ham, Oct 19.
Wingham took a 10-0 lead
through two periods before Brus-
sels managed to get on the board.
The team pulled together in the
third, being outscored only 4-2.
Brussels goals were scored by
Matthew White and Scott Phillips.
Brent Wheeler and White earned
assists.
Goalie Andrew McDonald made
a lot of tough saves in the losing
effort.
Blyth Peewees
settle for
3-3 tie
It was a see-saw battle when
Blyth PeeWees took to the ice in
Hensall, Oct. 20.
The teams ended the first period
with a 1-1 tie on the strength of a
goal by Craig Marks at the four-
minute mark.
Derek Cook slid one past Hensal-
l's goalie in the second only to see
them score in the period as well.
A combined effort by Nick
Courtney, Shaun Henry assisted
Robbie Archambault in putting one
in the net, giving the visitors three
goals half way through the third,
but the game ended in a tie.
Hensall's first two goals were
scored on power plays.
"It was a well-played game and
it's good to get that first game
under our belts," said Coach Gary
Courtney.
the Kincardine goalie kicked out 31
shots for the win.
In other news, the Bulls have
acquired Dan Balog from New
Hamburg Jr. C. in a trade for goalie
Jamie Taylor. Dan played with
New Hamburg this year and played
high school hockey in Elmira last
year.
Also, the week previous, Tim
Zaba of Ethel was welcomed to the
Bulls and joined on forward
scoring on his first short on goal as
a Brussels Bull.
The next home game for the
Bulls will be this Sunday, Oct. 27
when the Wiarton Wolves come to
town for a 2 p.m. start.
