Huronlea Happenings
50 years community service
Brussels Lions President Allan Teeft accepts a 50 year
charter from Vice District Governor Ray Pennington, right,
at the club's 50th anniversary program on Saturday
evening. The first meeting of the Brussels Lions Club was
March 29, 1946. Its official charter was April 17.
Membership today sits at 37. The club has consistently
over the years lived up to its motto "We Serve", aiding the
community through programs, sports and recreation,
community betterment and health and welfare projects.
Majestic WI learns nutrition
By Olive Sproul
It's almost impossible to believe
that September has disappeared so
fast. The weather's telling the
equinox is just around the corner,
so we can expect unsettled weather
for the next while.
Here at Huronlea, we had two of
our regular entertainers perform,
Alf Sutton, who is a comparative
newcomer, plays and sings popular
songs from the 40s, 50s, 60s and
70s. Mixed with that he throws in a
good selection of songs everybody
has always known, like She'll Be
Comin' Round the Mountain, 0
Susanna and Clementine to name a
few. Don Dunbar, who is also Elsie
Cunningham's nephew, has a huge
repertoire of songs, from old time
country to blues and soft rock.
Personally, he favours any kind of
country music being particularly
fond of Hank Williams Sr., Charlie
Pride and Patsy Cline.
Adventures in friendship came
around again. It was perhaps even
more enjoyable than usual, because
we had more people participating.
It's fun to listen to other's views on
any given subject.
The Walking Club met on Sept.'s
last Thursday. There was quite a
cool breeze, but at least the sun
shone.
We started October with a bang!
Our "buddies" from Brussels Public
School came to visit.
As usual they are a noisy and
excited crew, eager to make a new
friend. There are nearly twice as
many eight and nine-year-olds as
there are residents to be visited, so
most of us had two special friends.
Mine were Annette and Erika.
Annette is a little girl with hazel
eyes, and an engaging grin. Erika is
a true blonde with extraordinary
purple eyes and a beautiful shy
smile. She is six months younger
than Annette, but both are in the
same grade.
Once the children had picked
their buddies they all took a sheet
of bright orange construction paper
and cut out a pumpkin mobile for
us to hang on our doofs as a
Halloween decoration. Then we did
a crossword puzzle and quiz.
Then, it was time for them to
leave which they did noisily, but in
an orderly fashion, first picking up
all their litter and waving and
calling their goodbyes, all the way
out the doors. My, how quiet it
seemed all at once. We have tears
in our eyes at their going, but we
know they'll be back in early
November.
The next day was the annual Fall
Colour Tour. Once more we didn't
have the van, three cars went, with
about seven residents going on the
drive. They said they were able to
find some woods which had
changed colour.
There'd been a beauty boutique in
the morning where we got to have
fingernails cut and polished. Cindy
is getting really good at doing nails.
Next day there was a clothing
sale. J.B.S. comes once a year with
a pretty good selection of clothing,
so that shut-ins have an opportunity
to shop for themselves.
The first weekend in October
passes quickly with nearly
everyone having company
including me. Two of my 19
grandchildren visited, one of them

Everyone was welcomed to the
recent Majestic WI meeting by
President Ruth Sauve. This was
followed by a poem also read by
the president. Members then sang
the Institute Ode and then recited
the Mary Stewart Collect.
Roll call was "A new product on
the market that you would
recommend to others." It was
answered by 17 members and three
guests.
Minutes of the September
meeting were read by Secretary
Kathy Bridge and adopted as read.
Jean Bell then gave the treasurer's
report and a motion was made to
pay any outstanding bills.
Lucy Hesse gave informative and
interesting delegate reports of the
County Rally in Londesboro and
the conference held in Brussels.
Convenor Ruth Bauer then
introduced the speaker for the
meeting Kim Scholl, community
food advisor. Her focus is on safe
food handling, food preparation
and nutrition.
She stated that the idea of dieting
is out and a positive self image is
what is important. She handed out
the new Canada's Food Guide.
Some of the important facts she
touched on were that cholesterol
should only appear in foods that are
