GEORGE EDWARD COWAN
George Edward Cowan of
Chatham died peacefully at his
farm in Morris Twp. on Sunday,
Oct. 13, 1996. He was in his 77th
year.
George was one of six children
born and raised on a farm near
Blyth in Huron County.
He grew up to become a teacher
and served in education for 39
years in positions ranging from
teacher in a one-room rural school
to principal in village and town
schools, including the continuation
school.
In 1962, George was appointed
inspector of public schools for the
city of Sudbury, then in 1965 to the
same position for the City of
Chatham. From 1969 to his
retirement in 1978 he was a
superintendent with the Kent
County Board of Education.
Since 1978, he has been serving
the United Church of Canada as a
trained lay supply. His pastoral
charges included Climax, Sask.,
Dungannon/Nile, Blyth, Hensall,
Thamesville/Wabash/Croton,
Dresden, Cedar Springs, Stratford,
Fullarton.
George has a BA degree from the
University of Western Ontario and
a Master of Education degree from
the University of Tot onto.
For the past six years, he and his
wife Doris had been spending the
winter months in their motorhome
in Brownsville, Texas where
George was the park pastor. In
1994, George was a tour host for a
trip to the Holy Lands.
He was such an active person,
serving his family, his church and
his community so faithfully. His
most treasured times were those
spent with his loving wife, at
gatherings and on trips with his
children, especially those with his
grandchildren — fishing, taking
walks on the farm, and hugs.
Besides his wife of 53 years, the
former Doris Armstrong, George is
survived by his children Ted and
Chris Cowan, RR 5, Brussels; Greg
and Trudy Cowan, Quebec; Ken
and Liz Cowan, Belgrave and
Kathleen and Tim Myers, RR 2,
Bothwell.
He was the beloved grandfather
of 14 grandchildren, Ted Cowan,
Karen Slater, Laurie Cowan, Mike
Cowan, Jennifer Cowan, Tamala
Arm, Sarah Allman, Sunshine
Cowan, Sarah Cowan, Matthew
Cowan, Melissa Cowan, Brooke
Myers, Ashtyn Myers and T.J.
Myers and great-grandfather of
Heather Arm, Benson Allman,
Sean Slater, Tyler Slater and
Jasmine Cowan. He was the dear
brother of Benson Cowan,
Stratford; Bill Cowan, Goderich;
Mrs. Les Dalgliesh (Hazel),
Burford.
George was predeceased by one
sister, Grace Evans and one brother
Ken Cowan. Visitation was at the
Beattie-Falconer Funeral Home
"Tacker Chapel" on Tuesday.
The funeral service is 2 p.m.,
Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Blyth
United Church.
In memory, donations are
gratefully appreciated and can be
made to the Blyth United Church,
Sprucedale United Church,
Chatham or the St. Joseph's
Hospital Foundation — Paediatric
Unit, Chatham.

JANTJE (JENNY) JORRITSMA
Jantje (Jenny) Jorritsma of RR3,
Wingham, passed away at Wing-
ham and District Hospital, Satur-
day, Oct. 5, 1996, after a long and
courageous battle with cancer. She
was 61.
The former Jantje Bakker was the
beloved wife of Klaas Jorritsma
and dear mother of Tineke Jorrits-
ma of Toronto, Annette and
Andrew teRaa of Saltford and
Klaas and Shelley Jorritsma of
Morris Twp. She is survived by
four grandchildren and her sisters
Janna Reitsma and Wybrig deHaan
of Guelph, Dieuwke Martens of
Listowel, Bakke and James Cupido
of Edmonton and brothers, Jan
(John) and Tryntje Bakker of
Wingham and Rein and Grietje
Bakker of Guelph.
She is predeceased by her par-
ents, Sipke and Bakke Bakker, and
her infant grandson, Andre.
Pastor Pat Benaway officiated at
the funeral service which was held
at Wingham Baptist Church, Oct. 7.
Interment was at Wingham Ceme-
tery.

Friends and family of Dorothy
and Fleming Johnston gathered at
Brussels, Morris and Grey Commu-
nity Centre, Oct. 12, to help the
couple celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary.
Now residents of Morris Twp., at
RR2, Bluevale, the Johnstons were
wed, Oct. 9, 1946. Rev. Dunlop
officiated.
Attending the couple were
George Johnston as best man and
Mary Campbell as maid of honour.
The pair honeymooned in Nia-
gara Falls and Port Burwell.
They are. the proud parents of six
children: Wayne, Yvonne, Linda,
Larry, Laurie and Katherine, as
well as grandparents of 1 1.
