Literacy collections at Huron libraries HCP names PR director The Huron Country Playhouse has announced the appointment of Sheila Dougall as the director of public relations. She takes over for John McHenry, who left the Playhouse in August to join Theatre Aquarius. To many her name will be familiar. Dougall worked for the Playhouse for three summers: one summer in the box office and two summers as the publicity assistant under McHenry. "We feel we have found the perfect applicant to fill the position. Not only does she have the qualifications, her energy and drive will help us to achieve our goal of raising the profile of Huron Country Play,house to a more prestigious level," stated Shirley McIntyre, president of the board of directors. A native of Exeter, Dougall returns to her roots after graduating from Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto, with a specialty in public relations. In 1995, she graduated from Brock University (St. Catharines), with her honours degree in Business Communications. Along with her experiences at HCP, Dougall has had extensive PR experience with Employment Canada - Summer Employment Office, Conference Services and Centre for the Arts - Brock University, and most recently with Fleishman-Hillard Communi- cations Inc., a PR agency in Toronto. She is also a member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS). In response to her appointment, Dougall stated that she is thrilled to be back with the Playhouse. "This is an exciting time to be involved in the arts in Canada. I see this job as a true learning experience, and am looking forward to working with the new administration at the Playhouse." Her appointment is effective immediately. Doon celebrates Thanksgiving Join the villagers and farmers at Doon Heritage Crossroads for an old fashioned celebration of the seasons on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 13, 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Carve a pumpkin, help press cider, stuff a scarecrow and when it is all over, take home dessert for Thanksgiving dinner. The Friends of Doon have challenged local bakeries and restaurants to bring forth their best pumpkin pie for a pie tasting contest. Pies will be judged on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. and will then be available for visitors to purchase and take home. Other pie varieties will also be for sale and will be sold on a first come first serve basis. Literacy students and tutors can now access a wide range of literacy materials through the Huron County Library. Alpha Ontario has provided the Huron County Library with more than 800 literacy titles. Learners and tutors alike will find useful and up-to-date materials on all aspects of literacy and numeracy. Alpha Ontario is a resource centre for people involved in adult literacy and immigrant language training. They have developed a large collection of materials in many formats, including print, audio cassettes, videos, and multiple media kits, which they will lend to literacy programs. Ir The Huron County Historical Society met on Sept. 19 in the Old Town Hall, Exeter. President, Ron Latham, called the meeting to order with words of welcome to everyone. The minutes and treasurer's report were read and approved. Joe Ryder told about the history of the Old Town Hall which is 109 years old. It has recently been renovated. Joe Hogan introduced the guest speaker, Al Moon, an Ontario historian, who resides in London. The topic, "Restoring old photographs", was an illustrated talk with slides. Over the years photography has been done many ways and changed a lot. Many photographs are found in basements or attics. Help is always needed to shed any light on these faces and places and their histories are•alwa ,,,s skeptical. At your convenience! Clip it and post it and file it and mail it. order to better serve the literacy needs of Huron County Residents, these materials are now available through local libraries. Mini literacy collections are currently available at the Clinton and Exeter branch libraries. As many branch libraries are cramped for space, the majority of the literacy materials are housed at the Huron County Library's administrative office, but they can be sent out quickly to any Huron County, branch library upon request. Library staff invite all literacy learners and tutors to inform them of needs so they can work towards meeting them. Many samples of the types of prints were on display. Lunch was served. On Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. the annual dinner meeting will be held in Brucefield United Church. Guest speaker, Kathryn Hamilton will present the topic, "Pioneer Women in Early Schools." Tickets are available from the secretary or any councillor. The executive is: president, Myron Hussey; vice-president, Curtis Knight; secretary, Jason Fear; treasurer, Justin Campbell. The other competitors were Tanya Pletch, Jessica Lockridge, Peggy Procter, Jodi Snowden and Vicky Black. BIRTHDAYS This past week there have been three birthdays at our school. We make good use of our large playground and the track consists of bush and marshlands. The oldest racers go for 2.5 km. around our field. The winners are as follows: Mites, boys, David S., girls, Keralea Walker; Tykes, boys, Brian VanVeen, Girls, Julia Schlumpf; Atom, boys, Tyler Campbell, girls, Stacey Bowles; Bantam, boys, Philipp Affolter, girls, Shannon Clarke. Congratulations to all the runners. The first six finishers in each division will go to the North Cross-Country meet held annually at the Wingham Golf and Country Club.
