HCP names
PR director
The Huron Country Playhouse
has announced the appointment of
Sheila Dougall as the director of
public relations. She takes over for
John McHenry, who left the
Playhouse in August to join
Theatre Aquarius.
To many her name will be
familiar. Dougall worked for the
Playhouse for three summers: one
summer in the box office and two
summers as the publicity assistant
under McHenry.
"We feel we have found the
perfect applicant to fill the position.
Not only does she have the
qualifications, her energy and drive
will help us to achieve our goal of
raising the profile of Huron
Country Play,house to a more
prestigious level," stated Shirley
McIntyre, president of the board of
directors.
A native of Exeter, Dougall
returns to her roots after graduating
from Humber College of Applied
Arts and Technology in Toronto,
with a specialty in public relations.
In 1995, she graduated from Brock
University (St. Catharines), with
her honours degree in Business
Communications.
Along with her experiences at
HCP, Dougall has had extensive
PR experience with Employment
Canada - Summer Employment
Office, Conference Services and
Centre for the Arts - Brock
University, and most recently with
Fleishman-Hillard Communi-
cations Inc., a PR agency in
Toronto. She is also a member of
the International Association of
Business Communicators (IABC)
and the Canadian Public Relations
Society (CPRS).
In response to her appointment,
Dougall stated that she is thrilled to
be back with the Playhouse. "This
is an exciting time to be involved in
the arts in Canada. I see this job as
a true learning experience, and am
looking forward to working with
the new administration at the
Playhouse."
Her appointment is effective
immediately.
Doon celebrates
Thanksgiving
Join the villagers and farmers at
Doon Heritage Crossroads for an
old fashioned celebration of the
seasons on Sunday and Monday,
Oct. 13, 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Carve a pumpkin, help press
cider, stuff a scarecrow and when it
is all over, take home dessert for
Thanksgiving dinner. The Friends
of Doon have challenged local
bakeries and restaurants to bring
forth their best pumpkin pie for a
pie tasting contest. Pies will be
judged on Sunday, Oct. 13 at
2 p.m. and will then be available
for visitors to purchase and take
home. Other pie varieties will also
be for sale and will be sold on a
first come first serve basis.
Literacy students and tutors can
now access a wide range of literacy
materials through the Huron
County Library.
Alpha Ontario has provided the
Huron County Library with more
than 800 literacy titles. Learners
and tutors alike will find useful and
up-to-date materials on all aspects
of literacy and numeracy.
Alpha Ontario is a resource
centre for people involved in adult
literacy and immigrant language
training. They have developed a
large collection of materials in
many formats, including print,
audio cassettes, videos, and
multiple media kits, which they
will lend to literacy programs. Ir
The Huron County Historical
Society met on Sept. 19 in the Old
Town Hall, Exeter. President, Ron
Latham, called the meeting to order
with words of welcome to
everyone.
The minutes and treasurer's
report were read and approved. Joe
Ryder told about the history of the
Old Town Hall which is 109 years
old. It has recently been renovated.
Joe Hogan introduced the guest
speaker, Al Moon, an Ontario
historian, who resides in London.
The topic, "Restoring old
photographs", was an illustrated
talk with slides. Over the years
photography has been done many
ways and changed a lot. Many
photographs are found in
basements or attics. Help is always
needed to shed any light on these
faces and places and their histories

order to better serve the literacy
needs of Huron County Residents,
these materials are now available
through local libraries.
Mini literacy collections are
currently available at the Clinton
and Exeter branch libraries. As
many branch libraries are cramped
for space, the majority of the
literacy materials are housed at the
Huron County Library's
administrative office, but they can
be sent out quickly to any Huron
County, branch library upon
request.
Library staff invite all literacy
learners and tutors to inform them
of needs so they can work towards
meeting them.
Many samples of the types of
prints were on display.
Lunch was served.
On Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. the
annual dinner meeting will be held
in Brucefield United Church. Guest
speaker, Kathryn Hamilton will
present the topic, "Pioneer Women
in Early Schools." Tickets are
available from the secretary or any
