The Missionary Church, Auburn
"I need to talk with someone who
can tell me what has happened to
me."
The voice on the phone seemed
calm and rational and I discovered
that the man with whom I was
speaking was a self-confessed
manic-depressive alcoholic and
drug addict. This story unfolded as
we talked: at one o'clock on that
same Sunday morning he had
called for help to the psychiatric
unit of a local hospital. A Christian
nurse answered the phone and
talked with him for three hours.
She asked him, finally, if she might
pray with him and, with his
consent, she asked God to help
him. He hung up the phone,
stretched out on his bed, and
prayed, himself, that same simple
prayer. The room filled suddenly
with light and he knew in that
It was Pentecost 17 with the
seasonal colour green at the service
at Blyth United Church this past
Sunday. Rev. Stephen Huntley,
minister, conducted the service and
Michael Duthie, director of music,
was organist. Greeters were Lois
van Vliet and Linda Wilson while
ushers were Tom Cronin, Shirley
Rutledge and Rick and Anne
Elliott. Stewards were Warren
Moore and Shirley Rutledge.
Rev. Huntley opened with
greetings, call to worship and
announcements, followed by the
opening hymn, To God Be The
Glory.
The 18-voice choir rendered an
anthem entitled This Love Is Mine
with Michael Duthie accompanying
at the piano.
Old Testament Lesson from
Exodus 16 and New Testament
lesson from Philippians 1 were read
by Herb Shannon, while Rev.
Huntley delivered the Gospel
reading from Matthew 20: 1-16.
"Good God" was the title of the
sermon. Rev. Huntley based it on
the parable from Matthew of the
workers in the vineyard. He 'said
that it gives a graphic depiction of
what God and His Kingdom are
like.
This parable is a glimpse into the
wonder that is God. He is a
benevolent God who sends the rain

The first stop was in Exeter at the
Trivett Anglican Church which was
built in 1886 by Mr. Trivett. The
bell tower is made up of five
stories. The church accommodates
not only the Anglican but the
Catholics as well. The Catholics
worship at 9 a.m. and the Anglicans
worship at 11 a.m. The stained
glass windows are exquisite and
each one has a special meaning. In
front of the altar are beautiful hand-
embroidered cushions.

instant that he was different,
somehow. Now he was seeking
explanation on the phone several
hours later.
I told him that I knew exactly
that which had happened to him. I
asked him whether or not he had a
Bible and, when he admitted that
he had "stolen" a number of Gideon
Bibles from various places, I
directed him to the ninth chapter of
the book of Acts. There, the same
thing had occurred: Saul, the
persecutor of Christians, had been
confronted by the risen Christ, and
in the ensuing blaze of glory, he
had been left blinded - and
transformed!
It's been two months now since
that Sunday morning. My new
friend and I have both been wary:
did something miraculous happen,
actually, and would it last? There
have been some immediate and
remarkable results that say it did,
and it will. After ..f
to shine on the good and bad alike.
It says that during the grape
harvest the owner of the vineyard
goes to the marketplace early in the
morning in search of labourers.
This is urgent, as the grapes must
be picked quickly once ripe. The
owner made an agreement with a
number of workers to pay them one
denarius, which was the going
wage for a full day's work. He
hired men intermittently and
continued all day. Jewish Law
stated that such labourers were paid
at the end of the day.
The owners gave instruction to
pay the last hired first. Those who
had toiled all day would see what
would be paid to the last hired, who
might expect less. But, everyone
was paid the same. Those who had
toiled through the heat of the day
were angry and protested.
"What is this Parable about?"
Rev. Huntley asked. "Is it a new
daily, the desire for alcohol
disappeared; when all of the
reasons returned for turning to the
bottle, he thought better of it.
Relationships with his estranged
wife improved and his children
began to feel more comfortable in
their visits with him. When he did
have a relapse, recently, and went
on a binge, he realized what he was
doing and his recovery was almost
immediate. _
Does God reveal Himself in
mercy and give a new lease on life?
Ask Moses. He was a "has-been,"
living out his life as a shepherd on
me back-side of the desert, when he
saw one day a remarkable sight: a
bush burning but not consumed. He
discovered, there, the God of his
salvation and, rehabilitated, he
became Jehovah's instrument in
delivering the Israelites from
Egypt.
If all of that seems too long ago,
then ask my friend on the phone.
economic agenda for God's people?
Eventually workers would show up
for an hour and expect a full day's
pay. Not the best way to run a
company, he said. Parables are both
stories of grace and judgment. "In
the end, we are either judged by the
parable or comforted by God's
grace."
Jesus-says at the end of parable,
"So those who are last will be first
and those who are first will be
last."
Choral response, "God Now In
Peace" concluded the service.
Next Sunday, Sept. 29, Rev. Bill
McAuslan from Wesley-Willis
United Church in Clinton will be
guest minister. Rev. Huntley will
be exchanging pulpits with him.
Moms and a ots resumed thetr
season of fellowship and playtime.
