Plotting demise
Douglas Rain as Shylock, in Stratford Festival's The
Merchant of Venice, plans the destruction and death of
his hated, fellow merchant, Antonio.
Avon's 'Merchant' solid
Theatre review
By Janice Becker
A classic tale by William Shake-
speare, involving murderous inten-
tions, conniving thoughts, decep-
tion, bigotry and humour, Stratford
Festival's production of The Mer-
chant of Venice showcases strong
performances from its large cast.
The story of a young man's'
request for "dating" money, pushes
his friend into a precarious position
with a life-long enemy turned loan
shark.
When Antonio (portrayed by
Roland Hewgill) secures a loan
from rival merchant Shylock (Dou-
glas Rain) on behalf of his young
friend, Bassanio (Paul Haddad, an
alumni of the Blyth stage in A Field
of Flowers and Firefly). Shylock
quickly ceases the opportunity for
revenge.
The loan agreement states that if
the monies are not repaid in 90
days, Shylock has the right, to
extract a pound of flesh from Anto-
nio, who agrees to the deal because
of his certainty one of his many
merchant ships will return to har-
bour long before the deadline.
Probably the best scene of the
production is played out, in court,
when Antonio's ships sink, the loan
is past due and Shylock refuses any
payment other than his "pound of
flesh."
A very strong, vindictive and
cold-hearted portrayal of Shylock,
particularly in this scene, is given
by Rain. Throughout the story it is
evident Shylock loves his money
and jewels even more than human
life or for that matter, his daughter,
who has run off with an unsatisfac-
tory suitor (in his eyes). This greed
and one-mindedness is brought to
life in Rain's unyielding and frosty
performances.
An equally adept performance is
Hewgill's'portrayal of Antonio. His
character possesses a diametrical
personality to that of Shylock, will-
ing .,to give everything for a friend,
including his life. Even in the
moments before his presumed
death as the result of Shylock's
"pound of flesh", Antonio urges the
judgement to be made and the ver-
dict rendered.
The catalyst to this entire plot is
Bassanio's need for money to
impress the fair Portia, portrayed
by Susan Coyne..
Coyne is wonderful in her obvi-
ous disgust of the numerous suitors
who have come to woo the her with
her vast fortune. That disgust arises
from the fact that her father stipu-
lated in his will that an appropriate
suitor could not be chosen or dis-
carded by Portia herself, but only
through the answering of a riddle.-
Hilarity is played out as the arro-
gant and pompous try to claim her
fortune if not her heart.
It is Bassanio's true love and
humility which eventually succeed
in the quest.
This second story adds humour
The 1996 summer season at the
Blyth Festival ended Sept. 7 with
its final performance of the hit
Barndance Live!, and already the
Festival is busy preparing its line-
up of special fall and winter
fundraising events.
Kicking off the fall/winter season
is Don .Harron (aka Charlie
Farquharson) and his wife
Catherine McKinnon with the
Diane Leah Trio. These perennial
Blyth favourites will present an
evening of laughter and music on
Saturday, Sept. 28. Prior to their
performance, there will also be a
dinner and fashion show.
New Friends, Old Friends will
entertain area students with two
performances per day from Oct. 21
to 26. This show will use music,
actors, puppets and laughter to
present three stories set in South-
western Ontario featuring Tractor
Dan, Ralph & Fiona, and the
Amazing Adventures of Emily.
Like last year's show, Let's do
Munsch, this is sure to be a hit with
the younger crowd.
The Festival's Gala Auction will
be held at the Blyth Community
Centre Nov. 9. This popular event
is held every other year and
features agourmet dinner and live
auction with a wonderful assort-
ment of unique products and
services. Those attending can get
great deals by bidding on every-
thing from trips and theatre
packages to handmade crafts, tasty
treats and autographed books, art
work and CDs.
There will be two special events
at the Festival in December. Due to
popular demand, the mystery
dinner/theatre package, Come Back
to the Gym Mary Lou, Mary Lou
returns Dec. 6 and 7. This event
features 50s-theme food, fun and
music.
The following week, the Ontario
Ballet Theatre will present three

Best Wishes Only and lightness to the serious fate
which may befall Antonio.
The Merchant of Venice is a very
well-performed, almost flawless
production of one of Shakespeare's
best.
To witness the defeat of Shylock
and salvation of Antonio, through
cunning wit, The Merchant runs
through Nov. 3, Stratford's Avon
Theatre.
