Leading off the new releases is Soul of the Game *** (HBO), an
interesting and highly entertainint film focusing on Negro League
veterans Satchel Page, Josh Gibson and rookie Jackie Robinson, each
candidates to become the first black player in the major leagues. Of course
we know Robinson turned out to earn that distinction, but the reasons why
both Satchel Page and Josh Gibson, who were among the best to ever play
baseball, didn't receive that honour make for fascinating viewing. (Rated
PG)
The week's most popular rental will probably be The Birdcage
(MGM/UA) starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. The plot involves
a gay nightclub owner and his female impersonator partner who try to pass
themselves off as straight when the former's son announces he is getting
married to the daughter of a conservative U.S. senator. Directed by Mike
Nichols this remake of the very funny La Cage ax Folies received
generally good reviews. Also in the cast are Gene Hackman and Dianne
Wiest. (Rated R)
On the other hand The Quest (MCA/Universal), the first directing effort
of Jean Claude Van Damme was universally panned. The plot is a
mishmash of various film genres that involve seedy gun runners,
kidnappers, pirates, a lost city and of course, as one might expect, a
winner-take-all martial arts competition. (Rated R)
Canada's Kids in the Hall comedy troupe are the stars of Brain Candy
(Paramount) this off-the-wall satire about a mood altering new drug that
makes everyone who takes it unbearably happy. (Rated R)
Among the other new releases is Invaders From Mars **1/2 (HGV-
$14.95 or less) the Tobe Hooper remake of the bizarre 1950's film about
creatures trying to take over the world. While this is a fairly good retelling
I still prefer the 50s version (directed by the great production designer
William Cameron Menzies), which scared the wits out of me when I was a
kid. This collector's edition is also presented in widescrccn which restores
the film's original framing. (Rated PG)
Two of director David Cronenberg's early films, Shivers and Rabid
(C/FP - $19.95 or less) also get special treatment with new transfers and
additional interviews. (Rated R)
Among the priced-to-own films are the Shirley Temple classics, Little
Miss Marker and Now and Forever (MCA/Universal - $14.95 or less) in
computer colorized versions.
Don Knotts fans will no doubt be interested in How To Frame A Figg
and The Shakiest Gun In The West (MAC/Universal - $14.95 or less)
which is a remake of the Bob Hope classic The Paleface.

Grey
Central
Echo
On Sept. 3 the students of Grey
Central returned to school. For
some senior and junior
kindergarten children it would be a
whole new experience. Most
students returned with smiles and
newfound energy and enthusiasm
for the new school year. Most
eagerly awaited their teacher's
smiling face.
We have some new faces around
the school as our enrolthent has
grown to approximately 250
students. There are three new
teachers to our staff. Also our
school received a brand new roof to
keep us dry throughout the year.
We have experienced our first fire
drill and tornado drill already. We
hope that we will not have to report
to either this year!
We are all well into "the swing"
of events at Grey as we are
preparing for our North Huron
Soccer Tournament. Cross-Country
races and meet the teacher night on
Wednesday, Sept. 25. We hope to
attend and march to the Brussels
Fair on Sept.18 as well.

Students welcome 4 new teachers
Welcome to BPS
The students and staff of Brussels Public School have welcomed some new faces this year.
From left is Grade 6/7 teacher Crystal Whyte, Kdgn. Educational Assistant/School Resource
Diane Dolmage, Library Educational Assistant Joanne Jewitt and back again to teach the
Early Years is Mary Hall.
By Jen McDonald and
Kate Kuepfer
On Sept. 3, our school welcomed
four new teachers, Mrs. Dolmage,
Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Jewitt, and Ms
Whyte. We congratulate Ms Whyte
on her marriage Sept. 7.
Once again the school has been
(renovated. A new heating/air
circulation system in the gym has
been installed. The boilers have
been converted to natural gas.
Windows, lighting, ceiling
renovations, and painting took
place in five classrooms.
Two Grade 5 students
commented on the renovations. "I
think it's cool" said Rachel Elliot.
Patrick Ruston agreed.
On Friday, Sept. 6, Grade 7 and 8
students travelled to Clinton for
Technology 21. Matt Clarkson,
Grade 7, said "I finished the
robotics module but next time I
would like to go into cooking."
Courtney Sallows, also Grade 7,
said "It was cool. I like landscaping
because you get to design your own
backyard."
Also on Sept. 6, the Grade 6
class, went to the Blyth Threshers'
reunion. JcNli Sellers said "I found
it different, but I didn't like it very
well." Troy Backhaus said "The
Festival was great, I'd like to go
again." Students enjoyed free apple
cider, old tractors, saws, anvils,
steam engines, rope making,
popcorn, magazines, pencils, cool
crafts and the flea market.
Students are offered piano and/or
guitar lessons at the school.
Anyone interested in piano lessons
call Veronica Heally at 335-6486.
People interested in guitar please
call Kim Souch 527-1715.
Mr. Teall's Grade 4/5 class will
be recycling aluminum cans this
year. Please send aluminum cans to
school.
We hope everyone enjoyed the
barbecue Thursday, Sept. 12!
Thank you to Mrs. Corbett and her
wonderful team of volunteer cooks
and helpers.
Grade 8 is nothing like we
thought it would be. We figured
we'd have authority but I don't
think so! Also Mrs. Perrie is great!
Hopefully we'll have authority over
someone by the end of this year.
