For Teens, By Teens Of skies and seas and rocks and trees By Mark Nonkes This summer many of us took vacations across Canada. Among °those were Melinda Beacom, Megan Ratcliffe and myself. The three of us, separately, travelled across the country into prairies aqd the mountains. Melinda of Blyth, prepared to go on the trip months in advance and paid for her own plane ticket. On July 3, though waiting an extra two hours at the airport, she was off to her destination, Calgary, Alta. In Calgary, Melinda stayed with her aunt and uncle and took in a few of the attractions offered in the city including: Canada's most famous rodeo, the Calgary Stampede, the world's largest show jumping arena, Spruce Meadows along with an amusement park. In a city like Calgary she was surprised that the stereotypical views of the city and the cowboys were all false, she didn't see one person riding down the street on a horse and through several shopping ventures, "they dress normally too." Megan, of the Bayfield area, paid her own way and flew as well. Megan travelled throughout the mountains in British Columbia, visiting relatives who live in the Okanagan valley region in the towns of Coquitlam, Kelowna and Nelson. She toured the magnificent countryside which was beautified by the apple and cherry trees in the fruit farming areas of Okanagan and rode high up in the winding mountain roads where sites of mountain-fed rivers and streams flowed frequently. I travelled, unlike these previous two teens, by van with my family, across the United States and back into Canada to Fernie, British Columbia, for my uncles wedding. It took four days to get there, spending up to 10 hours a day in the van, it seems as though every town even one the size of Auburn, had a casino and a bar. The prairies, whiCh were not as flat as they were made out to be, were nice to view for awhile but are pretty boring. In Montana, we got our first glimpse of the mountains in the distance. And once we were there and driving among them they were outstanding; the pictures hardly do them justice. Once back in Canada we stopped at a site in Crow's Nest Pass called Frank's Slide. This mining town woke up one' morning at approximately 4:15 a.m. to the sound of rocks tumbling down the mountain. The rocks buried 75 people, who were sleeping in their houses and covered over a quarter of the town. On the Friday evening we reached Fernie, a town within the tree covered mountains. We stayed there for three days, and then, more slowly, headed our way home this. time through Canada. The moun- tains changed slowly from the tree covered mountains to the rocky mountains. In B.C. the most memorable experience was the Hot Spring near Swan Lake. To get to this area you travel down a twisty and tumy road which has no guard rail, one side that goes straight down, so far so that when you throw-a rock over the edge you can't hear it land, an beside that a mountain that goes straight up. The treacherous drive is worth it. The road leads you to an amazing hot spring that is just as hot as any hot tub, if not hotter. The water comes from a spring in the mountains and is mixed with sulfur which gives off an odour. There are three pools there, one hot, one medium and one cold. Another of nature's gifts is the Kootney River. This river has rapids so powerful and fast that you can see how the water has gouged through the mountains. The nicest place in the mountains is the famous Lake Louise where there is an actual glacier. Although this place is very beautiful, it is much too congested with tourists, a large percentage of them from Japan. In fact, a one bedroom suite at the famous Chateau overlooking the lake and glacier costs over $1,000 for one night. From there we went to Banff which in its own sense is beautiful, but the town is commercialized and congested. The next day we went to Calgary and saw the site of the Calgary Olympics and the Calgary Zoo. From there it was home again, the driving getting longer every day. We stayed a night in Saskatchewan with its treeless landscape and. countless wheat fields. Then on to Manitoba where we stayed in a beautiful provincial park. By the way, the provincial and national parks are much better than the privately-owned ones. Then into Northern Ontario where the trees are never ending. We swam in Lake Superior on Sept. 1. Bone chilling! Finally.,, after two weeks of travelling we returned home all a little annoyed with each other and were a bit more appreciative of school and seeing someone else. I think this trip, for each one of us, has really broadened our horizons and given us a new sense of pride about our country, a country whose landscape is so diverse and so beautiful. From the awe striking mountains to the Great Lakes and the prairies in between, Canada's west is indeed a place to discover. This has been the best trip of my life. I will never forget it. By Crystal J Hulley My assignment - Find the coolest, most awesome job known to mankind. My Problem - Flipping ham- burgers and stocking shelves are about the only jobs teens can get these days. This job has to be great! You know, a job where you get to spend lots of time outdoors, hang out with your friends until 1 or 2 a.m. as far away from your parents as possible. A job where you can make a total fool out of yourself and not feel stupid, your food is free and there is absolutely no THIS WEEK'S TOP 10 -th By Ashley Gropp Maybe it's a good teacher or everyone gets perfect or maybe you just like picking apart Romeo and Juliet, but for some reason we all have our favourite subjects. Music By Erin Roulston There's only one thing that happens in September that makes the end of summer seem less dismal, and that is the new television season. There's nothing like a good TV show and a bag of chips to make the homework go quicker. There's a massive amount of new shows this fall. Many of last year's favourites are returning for another season, and you'll notice some great, and some not-so-great shows are missing from the new lineup. I am sad to see that two of my personal favourite shows, two great Canadian productions will not be returning this year. Due South's final episode airs Thursday and Forever Knight ended abruptly with a very unbelievable show last spring. Fortunately, the first ever paperwork required. My Solution - Camp Counsellor. I know what you're thinking... "She's got to be nuts. I'd have to look after a cabin full of homesick, bedwetting, overhyper kids...." Ya, but kids can be kinda cool, and it definitely meets all the requirements I thought of. Not to mention the free pool use and the campfire skits. Whether it be at church camp, sports camp, music camp, even a computer camp, there's bound to be one that grabs your interest. Camp Counsellor is undeniably the coolest job in the world. season of Forever Knight is show- ing in syndication on Tuesdays. Back again for another round of course is Friends; even with the salary dispute the show still goes on. Mad About You is back with a little baby on the way, and Caroline is still in the City. X-files and Outer Limits is now on Sundays, and my beloved Lois and Clark is in the same old spot on Sundays. Of all the new shows this year the ones I'm most looking forward to are Millennium, created by Chris Carter (X-files), and Relativity which stars Kimberly Williams (Father of the Bride). It looks like a truly wonderful love story. And, being in poor taste I'm going to say that the rude and politically incorrect Men Behaving Badly is a show I'd like to see. Also Lush Life with the incredibly obnoxious Lori Petty (Tank Girl) is actually pretty funny.
