From the Minister's Study Appreciating the mother and father of us all By Rev. Mary Jane Hobden Knox Belgrave and Calvin-Brick United Churches September marks, for most of us, a return to the routine of work or school. For me, this year, the return has been more noticeable (and traumatic). For six months I was at home with a new baby and enjoying the life of being a "stay at home" mom. But, alas, all good things must come to an end. The six months of maternity leave ended and now I must learn to share my time between the family at home that I love and the family of the pastoral charge that I love. As I began to get back to my role as minister there was a discovery about how much love one can have. When first that small baby arrived in our home I felt that I wanted so much to give him (and his father) all my love and that there would be It was "Coffee Break" Sunday at the service at Blyth United Church, Sept. 18 as well as Super Sunday, with recognition being extended to teachers and assistants. Rev. Stephen Huntley, . minister conducted the service, assisted by Susan Howson. Organist was director of music, Michael Duthie. A social time preceded the service with "Coffee Break" members greeting and ushering. Greeters were Jean Plaetzer and Vera Badley. Ushers were Shirley Rutledge, Diane Ferguson, Joan Clark and Catherine Caldwell. Rev. Huntley opened with greetings and call to worship, then Debbie Siertsema and Darlene VanderVeen sang This Is the Song accompanying themselves on guitar. The "Service of the Word" followed with the first lesson, "In the Beginning" being read from Genesis by Jackie Falconer . The second lesson also from Genesis, "Paradise no more" was read by Rachel deBoer. The third lesson was from John I, "Paradise Restored" read by Joanne Van Amersfoort. The choir anthem was Till the Storm Passes By with Mr. Duthie accompanying on the piano. Following the service of the word, Susan Howson led the "Coffee Break" presentation. She explained that Coffee Break started in 1970 when Peace Church in South Holland, Illinois began a • Children's consumption of fresh produce is increasing. Now i discover a whole new reserve of love that can encompass all of the people that I encounter everyday. Becoming a parent has opened my eyes to many things; not all of them simply having to do with that little boy who seems to run my life. The image of God as parent has taken on new meaning. Perhaps we each need to stop and consider this role we assign to God. To each of us a parent can mean different things. Indeed our feelings about our own parents change as the situations we are in together change. What it means to be a parent seems to change depending on the way our child is acting at times. This simple realization that there is enough love for all was a reminder that if it is so for me, it must also be so for God. Often we wonder how can God program for preschoolers called Story Hour. The moms came, dropped their children off, then disappeared. Neva Evenhouse and Rev. Alvin VanderGreen decided to provide a program for the moms while they waited. Coffee Break was born. In the next 56 years, it grew to be international, in seven countries and four languages. Mrs. Howson said, in Matthew 5, 14-15, it says "You are the light of the world, on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. They put it on a stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. Let your light shine before man, that they may see your good deeds and Praise your Father in Heaven". This light means relaxation, a time to recharge and revitalize for the hectic schedules ahead, a time of fellowship, singing, studying together, God's word, she said. It is a time of learning, a time for have enough love for every one of us. As with any parent, God's ability to love grows with the size of the family. As each new life enters God's creation we can be assured that this life will also receive God's love and attention. At only seven months old it is difficult for my little one to understand when he is doing something he shouldn't. Although there are times I am sure he knows exactly what he is doing! We can be disappointed in what our children do sometimes but that does not make us love them any less. The same is true for God. We have many stories in the Bible which show-us that God's people can be a disappointing and frustrating group of children, and yet, God remains steadfastly with them, supporting and assisting. Yet, like all parents, God occasionally gets angry at the sharing, a time to experience the miracle of answered prayer and of course, a time for coffee and goodies. A ceremony followed with Laurie Sparling lighting a candle representing all the Coffee Break women in the U.S., Catherine Caldwell the women in Canada, Rev. Huntley, on behalf of Kate representing Australia, Joan Clark representing India, Lenora Davidson, Japan, Ruth Uyl, Korea and Janis Vodden representing Puerto Rico. The remaining Coffee Break members joined (forming a large circle) in an impressive ceremony and all lit a candle. Debbie Siertsema and Darlene VanderVeen sang a duet entitled Shine Like Stars, accompanying themselves on guitar. How Great Thou Art and Amazing Grace preceded commis- sioning and benediction. actions of the children. God shows us that parents must be just and merciful in dealing with children who make us angry. Sometimes the punishment seems far too heavy, and perhaps it is, but it must be enough to ensure that the lesson is learned. We all know, whether father or mother, daughter or son, that there are different dimensions and different personalities in parents. Mothers discipline and comfort in a way that is unique to them. The same is true for fathers. We sec these various dimensions in God and the reaction of the children to God. From our own experiences as parent and child we can come to better appreciate not only our own parents; but the God who is mother and father,of us all. Coffee break at Blyth UC
