Auburn, Ont. 519426-7220 Receiving assistance Staff and students at Walton Public School welcomed newcomers Jane Johnson, resource assistant, left, and Carol McGregor, educational assistant for kindergarten to the school recently. McGregor shares her time with Blyth Public School. Well it was "Welcome Back" to all those attending good ole Walton Public School. I happened to be by the Grade 1 class before they caught the bus to go home on Sept. 6 and I asked a few of them what they had learned that week. Keryn James Jacobs said he learned French. Grant Bolton said he enjoyed playtime. Lindsay Hoegy told me that she learned writing and David Pethic said he liked French and soccer. Andrew VanVliet said that school was 'nice' and the new playground equipment was really nice. When asked what Mrs. Bennett liked about the week she said it was all the smiling faces. She said that each class has its own character and she is noticing already how this year's group likes to sing. There are two new students, Scott and Peter Murray, in the class. Mrs. Vivian has the split Grade 2/3 class with 25 students. She said they have spent the week working on getting acquainted with each other and playing games along those lines. They have two new students in their class, Jereme Diehl, and Ruth Latham. Mrs. Vandendool teaches Grade 4. She said her class is working pretty hard at spelling, reading and math. They had fun playing 'back to school Bingo'. They also either wrote, or drew pictures of "Why I am glad to be back to school.' The class welcomed Nathan Murray to their class and welcomed back Eddie Sebben. Mrs. Scott is the new Early Years teacher. She said they are such 'little dears'. Judging from the glow on her face it is safe to say that she is enjoying her time with them. They welcomed Carol McGregor (nee - Axtmann) the educational assistant, to the class and also Jamie Diehl, who is new to the area. The school was a busy place Thursday night where ribbon cutting took place in the new gym and Greg Bowers slid down the . slide and through the ribbon on the new playground equipment. Hot dogs, cooked by Jim Crocker, were enjoyed by all and parents were busy meeting the teachers. Barb Durrell and Steve Bowers thanked everyone who helped in any way in helping put up the playground equipment and for those that have helped raise money. The committee has two years to pay for the equipment and anyone wanting, to make donations can contact Mrs. Crocker, the school principal. The school is also grateful to Chris and Judy Lee who are supporting the school's cross- country runners by donating 10 t- shirts. The shirts will carry the school's logo which was designed by Mrs. Bennett and Nicki VanderVeen this past spring. Brian Love will make the t-shirts up. The Early Years children had fun this past week by doing self- portraits. They each had to look in a mirror and draw what they saw and some very interesting pictures were the results of this exercise of self discovery. The children continued to learn some nursery rhymes and they enjoyed building on the lasy construction table. Chris Regele and Donnie Williamson had a fun week in Grade 2 collecting grasshoppers and •the odd cricket. They showed me a jar full of the critters. Maybe it went along with their counting games that they have been doing in 'school this past week. And if you were in the school last week you could have seen their bodies (paper outline) on the walls. The Grade 4s are doing literature on amazing animals. They are doing stories on why some animals are truly amazing. For instance, the hummingbird visits over 1,000 flowers in a day. Why does the Cheetah have spots? The kangaroo is amazing because of its pouch. The class also did some oral poem presentations. Each person had to memorize a poem and then recite it to the class and then they had to present the poem in some sort of creative way, such as using puppets, or pictures or actions. Squirts win Jan and Elva Wilbee had Ian's brother Roy and his wife, Eunice visit with them for the past week. The visiting‘ Wilbees are from Boissevain, MB. The Walton Boys Squirt baseball team took on the parents at an evening windup game. All hope of the parents winning quickly left when I saw Paul McCallum hit the ball clear to the fence and Brian Dolmage calmly lifted his glove and caught it. That wasn't bad enough though for one of our other big hitters, Blaine McCutcheon, whacked what should have been a homer, only to be caught by fielder Chris McNichol. The fun ended with everyone enjoying hotdogs and pop. Thanks to the coaches, JoAnn McDonald, Dave Linton and Fred McClure. A new beginning Staff, students, parents and members of the Walton School Advisory Council SAC were on hand Sept. 12 to witness the official opening of the new gymnasium/recreation area for the children. Hard work by SAC and staff at the school will gives the students an opportunity for indoor activities on cold winter days. The school has never had a gym area, forcing activities to be curtailed to those which could take place in a classroom. The new recreation area was created from a large room which formerly housed two classrooms. Taking part in the ribbon cutting are, from left: Pauline Siemon, Huron County Board of Education trustee for Seaforth and McKillop Twp., Principal Helen Crocker, School Advisory Council (SAC) Chair Barb Durrell and SAC Vice-President Rita Rice-Bowers.
