Consumers must have confidence in the safety, quality and integrity of the food they and their families eat. Ontario Pork has embarked on a mission of setting up a world. class recognized Quality Assurance (QA) program. The food industry is advocating such a program be put in place for many food commodities using the- Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point program (HACCP). HACCP was originally developed by the U.S. Space Agency and consists of a method of identifying potential hazards (hazard analysis) within an operation and then determining the critical control points at which controls are necessary to ensure safety and program compliance. What does all this mean to you as a producer of high quality pork? Well, a simple answer would be to maintain the always important and much needed export markets as well as keeping our home markets satisfied. Both domestic and foreign buyers purchasing our product are starting to ask for a First Aid On The Farm is a new program designed to teach farmers and their families about specific hazards of working on the farm and how to prevent life threatening injuries. Ontario pork producers will need to have such a program in place if they want to increase or even maintain a competitive edge in the everchanging market place. The Quality Assurance program strives to document the safety, quality and integrity already practised by the swine producers of this province. By initiating this QA program we will be assuring Ontario Pork Producers are ready to meet the market demands of the next century. HACCP is being put into place in several different forms in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the United States and Europe. The Ontario Pork Quality Assurance Committee has looked at these programs and is proceeding to set up a trial program on swine operations throughout Ontario. Within the next few weeks Ontario Pork will be looking for Ontario swine producers who would like to work with the Quality Assurance Committee on a pilot program being set up on swine operations in Ontario. For more information about the above article, the QA program or being considered for the pilot study, please contact J. Leask at Ontario Pork (416) 621-1874.
