Lilting tunes When the Irish Rove performance promises a For a 'rollicking good time for the entire family', the Irish Rovers' Oct. 3 concert in Blyth may fit the bill. After touring for more than 30 years, the fun of an Irish Rovers performance still leaps off the stage. Now a seven-member band, they have left an original behind, once-lead singer Will Millar, and addell fresh, young, fuller voices and varied musical talents to the mix. A very popular, crowd-pleasing component of any Rover perfor- mance is the storytelling and jokes by singer Jimmy Ferguson. Singer, composer, guitarist and spoon player George Millar is the FBAO hosts broomball ref clinics The Federation of Broomball Associations of Ontario (FBAO) has set the dates for the referee clinics for the upcoming season. The central west clinic will be held at the Ranton Place Hotel, Palmerston, Sept. 14 and 15. The clinic begins at 9 a.m. and features Level III instructors. The cost is $40. Joe Millar, George's cousin, brings his talent on the bass, har- monica, tin whistle and button-key accordion. Millar's rich, deep voice is featured in many of the tradition- al ballads. Once leader of a successful Ceili band, Wilcil McDowell is an accor- dionist, specializing in traditional Scottish and Irish tunes. The Celtic rhythms of Kevin McKeown have been an important component to the Rovers sound for 10 years. Wallace Hood, on mandolin, Irish bouzouki, cittem, tenor banjo, guitar, tin whistle and vocals, com- bines with McDowell for some dazzling instrumentals. He was the musical arranger and chief musi- cian for the popular Belfast band Pat's People and still plays with them when not touring with the Rovers. Rovers say they love small towns because they have "down home people." From soft ballads to whimsical jigs and reels, an Irish Rovers' con- cert promises hand-clapping, sing- a-long fun.
