After last week's trickle of new video releases the flood gates seem to
have opened again with several interesting titles designed for rental and a
vast number for sale at reasonable prices. Leading the list is Up Close and
Personal **1/2 (Touchstone) starring Robert Redford and Michelle
Pfeiffer. The story is based very loosely on the rise and fall of TV news
anchorwoman Jessica Savitch who built her career on raw talent, ambition
and her relationship with mentor/boyfriend Warren Justice. Many of the
gritty elements of her story are glossed over, but the film is still worth a
look. (Rated PG)
Comedy fans may enjoy Sgt. Bilko (MCA/Universal) the latest classic
TV show to be given the big screen treatment. Steve Martin plays the
military con-man originated by Phil Silvers in the 1950s. (Rated PG-13)
The Truth About Cats And Dogs (Fox) stars Janeane Garfolo as a shy
young woman who uses her sexy next-door neighbour (Uma Thurman) to
help her woo a handsome photographer in this reworking of Cyrano de
Bergerac. (Rated PG-13)
Kermit the Frog and an assorted crew of other creatures set sail in
Muppet Treasure Island "1/2 (Disney-$24.99 or less) a reasonably
enjoyable off-the-wall telling of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel.
(Rated G)
Horror fans will no doubt want to check out Halloween: The Curse of
Michael Myers (Alliance) yet another installment in the popular series.
This is the final screen appearance of character actor Donald Pleasance.
(Rated R)
Of course let's not forget the mammoth Beatles Anthology (Malofilm -
$175.95 or less) which contains four more hours of footage than the recent
television broadcast. Best of all you can watch it with none of those
annoying commercials.
Comedian Rowan Atkinson is back with four new volumes of Mr. Bean
(Polygram - $19.95 or less) including one that contains never before seen
footage.
More widescreen versions of popular movies are also available this
week. The titles include, Forrest Gump, Romeo & Juliet, The Hunt For
Red October, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games; Cutthroat Island,
and Seven.
The earliest movie incarnations of DC Comics ever popular Superman
are now being offered at new lower prices. The 15-chapter cliffhanger
serials Superman and Atom Man vs. Superman starring Kirk Allyn from
the 1940s, each run over four hours while numerous episodes from the
1950s television series are also available. Great fun!
