THIS WEEK'S TOP 10
By Gina Lobb
On Sunday, July 28 14 Italian
exchange students travelling
through AFS inter-cutter arrived in
Canada. They spent the next four
weeks with families from Clinton
and the surrounding area. Rachel
Jenkins organized the program,
Shari and Nancy Lobb were in
charge of organizing activities and
two helpers were Jeff Lobb who
assisted with transportation and
Anthony Martellacci.
Every week from Monday to
Friday they went to school at St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church in
Clinton. During the mornings they
learned English with conversational
activities. The afternoons were
spent doing a variety of activities
such as a soccer game, scavenger
hunt, learning to play baseball, etc.
A girl Maria and a boy Dario,
two wonderful and comical
characters, stayed with us. As you
would expect it was a little tense
the first day, but we all got used to
each other and got along great. We
taught them new words and they
taught us as well. Many of us
learned a fair bit of Italian, the trick
is to remember what we've been
taught.
Sometimes conversations or
comments were not understood or
were misinterpreted, which caused
a little hostility on occasion.
Everything was usually explained,
so even if they didn't get the

A friend gives financial advice,
but it doesn't seem like a good idea.
Calmly work out problems with
meaning intended, things
eventually were smoothed out.
On their last weekend in Canada
all 14 students camped at our
house. The main language that
night was Italian, but I had just as
much fun as they did. In all there
were five or six tents, three of them
being "six man tents". Only two
tents were really used as the
majority of us sat around the fire
and talked.
By about 4:30 a.m. everyone was
getting hungry so we made pizza
and a big tray of french fries. When
I apologized for the uncooked pizza
I told them it was "soggy". That
word raised many questions.
We saw the sunrise and they took
pictures. It was luckily very clear
that day, so their pictures turned
out great. About half of us went for
a swim, while others decided to get
some sleep. The rest of the day was
spent just laying around mostly
after we cleaned up.
Aug. 24, the day of departure
arrived and no one wanted to go.
The bus was an hour and a half late
but we didn't mind much because it
gave us a bit more time together.
Then when the bus arrived and
many tear-filled goodbyes were
said they drove off to catch their
plane.
We will never forget one another
and hope to see each other again
sometime in the future.

Stop daydreaming and get to

By Ashley Gropp
Well, it's lime for another year of
stubborn locks; crabby teachers and
boring classes.
It's the time of year where we
take off from our summer jobs to
work for free.
But believe it or not, there are
actually area students who have
reasons for dragging themselves
out of bed at unthinkable times to
catch that big yellow school bus.

The Island of Dr. Moreau stars
Marlon Brando as Dr. Moreau, a
man who wants to be God. Ah,
we've seen this before. A genetic
engineer who tinkers with nature
and ends up painfully sorry when it
blows up in his face.
It worked for Jurassic Park, why
shouldn't it work again?
Dr. Moreau, a Nobel prize
winning scientist who went missing
to most of civilization is now on an
island creating the perfect human.
Val Kilmer plays Montgomery, a
vet to the "animals" Moreau
creates, who slips morphine and
mushrooms into the vaccinations so
the animals seem a little peppier.
David Thewlis plays Douglas,
the innocent malt trapped on the
island with no idea of what wacky
world he's lust been thrown into.

Memories of your awesome
summer, and a heavy workload at
school will get you down. Count on
friends to help you out.
There's also the beautiful love
interest; wno used to be a cat, and
then, of course the bad guy; a
walking, talking hyena who carries
a big machine gun and a bigger
God complex.
This film is the third movie
version of H. G. Wells' novel,
written one hundred years ago. The
others were made in 1933 and
1977, but this one has a twist on the
others — it could happen. With our
new technology it is believable that
the genes of two species could be
combined. The plot is no longer
science fiction.
I enjoyed this movie, Brando
dressed like a ghost and Kilmer
raved like a madman included. I
didn't understand it, the acting was
bad, the effects were typical, the
plot was incomplete and
predictable, but the popcorn was
great, and the theatre seats comfy.
But I suggest waiting until it
comes out on video to see it, if you
seep it at all, unless you're really
..desperate to get out of the house.
