Active community worker begins new experience
By Bonnie Gropp
It would have been difficult in
recent years to attend most activi-
ties in the village of Brussels and
not see Wendy Martin.
Martin, who has lived in Brussels
since she came here as a three-year-
old in 1979, has been actively
involved in the community, both as
a volunteer and through her work.
On Sept. 5, she is saying good-
bye, however, to begin a three-
The Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs- is moving to new
headquarters in Guelph. The move
will take place in stages over the
next few weeks.
Staff currently work in nine
buildings in Toronto and Guelph,
in addition to field offices
throughout the province. The move
will bring together all of the
ministry's Toronto and Guelph staff
in one building, except for a small
contingent of staff who will remain
in Toronto to serve as the Queen's
Park point of contact for the
ministry.

also has a new principal this year
with the retirement of Ron Jewitt.
George Barker will be the head of
the school, welcoming Lori Jewitt,
who is filling a maternity leave
position; Lorrie Goos, a resource
education assistant, who will be
replaced by Jill Sygrove when she
takes maternity leave; Andrea
Brown, kindergarten education
assistant and Rosie Wiese, Grade 1.
Dave Medd will return in January
month overview course at St.
Mary's University in Halifax on
teaching English as a second lan-
guage. In January she will move on
to India to spend three weeks with
the Mennonite World Conference.
"I'm hoping to extend my stay by
finding some connection while I'm
there."
Martin, who, in addition to work-
ing in various aspects of the Men-
nonite Church, became part-time
of Stone Road and Gordon St. (near
the University of Guelph). The
address is 1 Stone Road West,
Guelph, Ontario, N1G 4Y2.
The general telephone number in
Guelph is 1-888-4OMAFRA (1-
800-466-2372). In addition, direct
telephone numbers for ministry
contacts will be communicated to
clients as each branch completes it
move.
As the move progresses, ministry
clients will receive postcards
advising them about the new
telephone numbers they need. Each
branch will inform its clients about
obtaining service during specific
moving days.

Australia.

welcoming children back with a
new playground and a rearrange-
ment of room assignments to better
accommodate all school needs.

for three years, youth worker at
The Ark in January of 1995.
Her vagabond urge was born in
college when she visited the
Dominican Republic and after
working with Mennonites in Mexi-
co in 1992.
Martin also at one point had
worked at the Cambridge Multicul-
tural Centre. "I always had a notion
I wanted to see the world. That
increased my interest in travel," she
says, adding, "But I had to come
back to Brussels first."
Martin, who will spend some
time back home at Christmas
before leaving for India, was guest
of honour at an appreciation tea at
the Thrift Shop on Wednesday,
Aug. 28 and at an Ark surprise
party on Aug. 22.
"I feel like my goodbye's have
been said now.
